Shelf Sea Biogeochemistry - Nymph Bank Lander

Tom Hull
This data set consists of biogeochemical sensor data from seabed moorings. Temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll fluorescence, turbidity where fitted to a Cefas ESM2 data logger. These instruments gathered data for 5 minutes every 30 minutes. Sensors were validated against in-situ samples during deployment and recovery. Fluorometers were standardised using fluorosphere beads. Turbidity meters were calibrated using Stabical (Hach, US). The moorings were also fitted with upward facing acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP), this data...

Molecular characterization of an Endozoicomonas-like species associated with mass mortalities of king scallop Pecten maximus L. in United Kingdom

Irene Cano
The king scallop Pecten maximus L. is the fastest growing fishery in the UK and currently the second most valuable. Mass mortality events in scallops have been reported associated with rickettsia-like organisms (RLOs) world-wide, however the causative agents were uncharacterised. In May 2013 and 2014 two mass mortality events affecting king scallops were recorded in the Lyme Bay Marine Protected Area (MPA) South West England. Histopathological examination showed gill epithelial tissue infected with RLO at...

One file contains data on microplastic abundance expressed in number of particles from 12 transects in Port Vila Bay and Mele Bay in Efate Island (Vanuatu) in 2018 with indication of volume and surface surveyed and transect info (duration, coordinates, comments). The file also contains information on blank used and contamination checks. The other file contains spectrum analysis of particles carried out with a ATR-FTIR. A READ-ME text file...

Predictor variables and groundtruth samples for north-west European continental shelf quantitative sediment analysis

Strategy Data Governance
Input data used to model sediment grain size for the north-west European continental shelf. Data includes: Sediment groundtruth observations with measured fractions of mud, sand and gravel, also converted to two additive log-ratios. These total 45761 samples. Also included are the eight predictor variables that were used to model sediment grain size. These were: Bathymetry, Bathymetric position index at a 50-pixel radii, Bathymetric position index at a 434-pixel radii, Distance from coast, Current speed at...

Sea Angling 2012 - Online catch survey

Mike Armstrong
Data from online survey done within Sea Angling 2012 project The Sea Angling 2012 project includes a number of different surveys running in parallel to provide a detailed overview of all forms of sea angling throughout England during 2012. Cefas carried out an online survey for anglers to record more detailed information on their activities, catches and expenditure during 2012.

CLiP Vanuatu Microplastics in biota 2018

Strategy Data Governance
This dataset contains 2 csv files. One file contains data on microplastic abundance expressed in number of particles from biota samples (tuna stomachs, land crabs and reef fish) collected around Efate Island (Vanuatu) in 2018 with indication of sample wet weight, species and other characteristics. The file also contains information on blank used. The other file contains the profile of a ATR-FT-IR spectrum analysis of a plastic piece found in a tuna stomach . A...

RV Cefas Endeavour FerryBox Monitoring System

David Morris
This dataset has been extracted as part of an exercise to assemble "all" Cefas Temperature Data and publish it in a Data paper. It is one of 17 Cefas data sources assembled. Ferryboxes are packages of instruments that are usually placed on board commercial ships such as ferries to monitor temperature, salinity and other water properties. This data series is from 2009-2013 from the cruises of the RV Cefas Endeavour. The RV Cefas Endeavour was...

North East Atlantic Seafloor Litter Data 1992-2014

Thomas Maes
CEFAS Seafloor litter data obtained by research vessel fish and environmental surveys in North East Atlantic waters 1992 -2014. Data from 3 particular survey series, the International Bottom Trawl Survey (IBTS), the ICES Ground Fish Surveys (Q4SW) and the Clean Seas Environment Monitoring Programme (CSEMP) survey from 1992 to 2014, using the classification system according to Galgani et al., 2013. Galgani, F., Hanke, G., Werner, S., Oosterbaan, L., Nilsson, P., Fleet, D., Kinsey, S., Thompson,...

Cefas Electronic Data Storage-Tag Database

David Morris
This dataset has been extracted as part of an exercise to assemble "all" Cefas Temperature Data and publish it in a Data paper. It is one of 17 Cefas data sources assembled. Electronic tags that record temperature and depth were attached to, or implanted into, cod caught in the southern North Sea between 1999 and 2009 (for methods see Neat et al., 2014). Data from tags that were returned from recaptured cod were downloaded and...

ScanFish – North and Celtic Seas

David Morris
This dataset has been extracted as part of an exercise to assemble "all" Cefas Temperature Data and publish it in a Data paper. It is one of 17 Cefas data sources assembled. ScanFish is a high performance towed undulating CTD which was deployed by Cefas, initially, to aid the understanding of the coupling between physical and biological processes (Brown et al., 1996). It was towed behind the vessel at approximately 8 knots and undulated from...

SmartBuoy Marine Observational Network - Phytoplankton Data 2001-2017

Alex Milligan
This dataset consists of analysed phytoplankton data from the years 2001-2017 inclusive collected from the SmartBuoy moorings at Celtic Deep, Dowsing, Gabbard/West Gabbard/WestGabbard2, Warp and Liverpool Bay using WMS and EDU automated water samplers. SmartBuoys consist of a 4 meter tall stainless steel frame with a fibreglass toroid for buoyancy. Instruments are attached at a nominal 1 meter depth to the frame. The water samplers collect into pre-spiked bags containing acidified Lugols Iodine on a...

North Sea phytoplankton pigments 2010 to 2011

Veronique Creach
These data contain information about the individual accessory pigments of phytoplankton measured by High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) from two North Sea International Bottom Trawl Surveys in 2010 and 2011. These have been applied like a 'fingerprint' to identify phytoplankton functional types (PFT's). 10L water samples were taken from niskin bottles on a rosette fired at various depths, or from the continuous flow ferrybox water supply (approx. 4m water depth) in adverse weather conditions. Water...

Cefas Coastal Temperature Network

David Morris
The Coastal Temperature Network consists of Cefas (and predecessor) originated data and data from external suppliers, who have agreed their data can be published as part of the network (Jones, 1981). The earliest data are from 1875 (Owers Light vessel) and have been supplied by the Met Office. The longest continuous record provided here is from Eastbourne (1892–2014). Sampling is from piers and breakwaters 50-200m from the shore where possible (Jones, 1981). The present network...
