Cefas Plankton Analysis System

David Morris
This dataset has been extracted as part of an exercise to assemble "all" Cefas Temperature Data and publish it in a Data paper. It is one of 17 Cefas data sources assembled. Sampling of plankton has been carried out by Cefas since the 1940’s. In recent decades sampling has mainly been concentrated on fish eggs and larvae, and other zooplankton. Samples were collected using ‘high–speed towed nets’ that capture plankton from the surface to near–seabed....

Large Woody Debris Restoration Field Experiment Dataset

Murray Thompson
Riverine species and environmental data relating to Thompson et al. (2017) Large woody debris rewilding rapidly restores biodiversity in riverine food webs. Journal of Applied Ecology. The purpose of this study was to test for causal evidence of ecological restoration following the introduction of large woody debris in rivers. Chlorophyll-a and diatom community structure was estimated from stone scrapes; a Hess sampler (0.017m2) with 335µm mesh was used to collect invertebrates and coarse (CPOM) and...

Reconstruction of North Sea trawling effort 1985-2015

Strategy Data Governance
Spatial distribution of total international otter and beam trawling fishing effort, for all ICES rectangles (0.5 degree latitude by 1 degree longitude) of the North Sea, covering a 31-year time span from 1985 to 2015. The dataset was largely reconstructed using compiled effort data from 7 fishing effort time-series and completed by estimations of missing data. Lat and Long coordinates in the data represent the centre of each ICES rectangle. For the 31-year period from...

Shelf Sea Biogeochemistry - Nymph Bank Lander

Tom Hull
This data set consists of biogeochemical sensor data from seabed moorings. Temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll fluorescence, turbidity where fitted to a Cefas ESM2 data logger. These instruments gathered data for 5 minutes every 30 minutes. Sensors were validated against in-situ samples during deployment and recovery. Fluorometers were standardised using fluorosphere beads. Turbidity meters were calibrated using Stabical (Hach, US). The moorings were also fitted with upward facing acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP), this data...

Cefas Multibeam Acoustics – Sound Velocity Profile Temperature Data

David Morris
This dataset has been extracted as part of an exercise to assemble "all" Cefas Temperature Data and publish it in a Data paper. It is one of 17 Cefas data sources assembled. The RV Cefas Endeavour has been routinely deploying Multibeam acoustic measurement techniques since 2005, with particular emphasis being placed on habitat mapping projects (Brown and Vanstaen, 2008). As part of the calibration of the various acoustic systems, a CTD cast is performed at...

Atlantic cod catch records from Cefas survey cruises in the Arctic 1930-1959

Bryony Townhill & John Pinnegar
The data are records of the station details and cod catches from UK government fisheries survey cruises in the Arctic region from 1930 to 1949. They have been digitised from survey logbooks held by the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science.

Management Strategy Evaluation toolkit for Ecopath with Ecosim (model output and technical report)

Christopher Lynam
This dataset consists of output from a computer model that predicts responses of 69 functional groups from plankton to whales to changing fishing pressure. Scenarios are run using the newly built plug-in (see report) that allows for an assessment of the effect of model parameter uncertainty. The base model is the ICES key-run of EwE for the North Sea described here http://data.cefas.co.uk/#/View/2847. Format of the data: Zipped csv files covering the hindcast period 1991-2013 (inclusive)...

Cefas Coastal Temperature Network

David Morris
The Coastal Temperature Network consists of Cefas (and predecessor) originated data and data from external suppliers, who have agreed their data can be published as part of the network (Jones, 1981). The earliest data are from 1875 (Owers Light vessel) and have been supplied by the Met Office. The longest continuous record provided here is from Eastbourne (1892–2014). Sampling is from piers and breakwaters 50-200m from the shore where possible (Jones, 1981). The present network...

Horizontal and vertical movement data derived from a data storage tag deployed on a single Atlantic cod in the English Channel from 2005 to 2006

Strategy Data Governance
These data are derived from the deployment of a single data storage tag on an Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in the English Channel. The cod was tagged in the Southern North Sea on 25/03/2005 and was recaptured in the Eastern English Channel on the 09/01/2006. The cod migrates down through the English Channel, resides in the Celtic Sea and then returns. The dataset contains 291 days of information. Each day consists of 144 vertical movement...

Cefas Electronic Data Storage-Tag Database

David Morris
This dataset has been extracted as part of an exercise to assemble "all" Cefas Temperature Data and publish it in a Data paper. It is one of 17 Cefas data sources assembled. Electronic tags that record temperature and depth were attached to, or implanted into, cod caught in the southern North Sea between 1999 and 2009 (for methods see Neat et al., 2014). Data from tags that were returned from recaptured cod were downloaded and...

The effect of acid and neutral Lugol's iodine solution on phytoplankton sample preservation, experimental results

Oliver Williams
The data are the results of lab experiments conducted in 2013-2014 at the Cefas laboratory, Lowestoft, UK. Multiple marine phytoplankton taxa were preserved in one of three different Lugol's Iodine solutions (one neutral and two acidified at different strengths). Samples were enumerated over a period of 8 months to investigate degradation rates across taxa and preservatives. Samples consisted of 5 cultured species Ditylum brightwellii, Prorocentrum lima, Karenia mikimotoi, Coccolithus pelagicus & Tetraselmis suecica and one...

CLiP Solomon Islands Marine Litter Abundance and Composition

Strategy Data Governance
This dataset contains 3 csv files. One file contains data on marine litter abundance and composition expressed in number of items per category. One file contains location names and GPS coordinates in decimal degrees. One file contains metadata collected during the clean-ups. A READ-ME text file contains description of columns content for the three csv files. Marine litter items were collected during beach clean-ups on Guadalcanal Island (Solomon Islands) between November 2018 and January 2019....

Quantitative sediment composition predictions for the north-west European continental shelf

Strategy Data Governance
Spatial predictions of the fractions of mud, sand and gravel as continuous response variables for the north-west European continental shelf. Mud, sand and gravel fractions range from 0-1 (i.e. 0-100%). These fractions were generated from two additive log-ratios (ALR), ALRs and ALRm which are independent, unconstrained response variables. These raw predictions as rasters are also included presented in the attached dataset. Predicted fractions have been combined to predict the likely sediment classification based on the...

Young Fish Survey Data 1981 to 2010

Total numbers of individual fish identified during the Cefas Young Fish Survey (YFS) which ran from 1981 to 2010. The survey deployed a light 2-meter beam trawl to survey inshore locations for small / young fish around the British Isles, predominantly along the south and east coasts. Total numbers of fish (identified to species or if not to the highest taxonomic level) were recorded at each station, and were measured in the majority of cases....
