Quantitative sediment composition predictions for the north-west European continental shelf

Strategy Data Governance
Spatial predictions of the fractions of mud, sand and gravel as continuous response variables for the north-west European continental shelf. Mud, sand and gravel fractions range from 0-1 (i.e. 0-100%). These fractions were generated from two additive log-ratios (ALR), ALRs and ALRm which are independent, unconstrained response variables. These raw predictions as rasters are also included presented in the attached dataset. Predicted fractions have been combined to predict the likely sediment classification based on the...

Cefas 1976 Phytoplankton Cruise Series

David Morris
This dataset has been extracted as part of an exercise to assemble "all" Cefas Temperature Data and publish it in a Data paper. It is one of 17 Cefas data sources assembled. A series of 12 cruises was carried out in 1976 by DFR staff to investigate the distribution, abundance, mortality and main predators of planktonic fish eggs and larvae of important commercial fish species (e.g. plaice, cod). The cruises secondary aims included the investigation...

Marine climate change impacts: Implications for the implementation of marine biodiversity legislation

MCCIP
This Report Card looks at climate change and marine biodiversity legislation, with a focus on the legislation used to establish various types of marine protected areas.

North Sea Historical Effort by Rectangle by Month: 1913 -1980

Georg Englehard
This dataset includes long-term, spatially detailed information on UK trawl and seine fishing effort in the North Sea, by month and ICES rectangle. The period covered is 1927,1937, 1947, 1957, 1967 and 1977. Effort data (number of hours fishing) are shown separately for each of the major historical demersal trawling and seining fleets of the UK: sailing trawlers (pre-WWII only), steam trawlers (until the 1970s), motor trawlers, steam seiners (pre-WWII only), and motor seiners. These...

Shelf Sea Biogeochemistry - East Of Haig Fras Seabed Lander

Tom Hull
This data set consists of biogeochemical sensor data from seabed moorings. The mooring consists of a 3 legged stainless steel "minilander" 1.5 meters high. The biogeochemical sensors are mounted at 1 meter above the seabed. Temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll fluorescence, turbidity where fitted to a Cefas ESM2 data logger. These instruments gathered data for 5 minutes every 30 minutes. Sensors were validated against in-situ samples during deployment and recovery. Fluorometers were standardised using fluorosphere...

Horizontal and vertical movement data derived from a data storage tag deployed on a single Atlantic cod in the English Channel from 2005 to 2006

Strategy Data Governance
These data are derived from the deployment of a single data storage tag on an Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in the English Channel. The cod was tagged in the Southern North Sea on 25/03/2005 and was recaptured in the Eastern English Channel on the 09/01/2006. The cod migrates down through the English Channel, resides in the Celtic Sea and then returns. The dataset contains 291 days of information. Each day consists of 144 vertical movement...

Reconstruction of North Sea trawling effort 1985-2015

Strategy Data Governance
Spatial distribution of total international otter and beam trawling fishing effort, for all ICES rectangles (0.5 degree latitude by 1 degree longitude) of the North Sea, covering a 31-year time span from 1985 to 2015. The dataset was largely reconstructed using compiled effort data from 7 fishing effort time-series and completed by estimations of missing data. Lat and Long coordinates in the data represent the centre of each ICES rectangle. For the 31-year period from...

SmartBuoy observational network - North Dogger

Naomi Greenwood
On the SmartBuoy, surface measurements of plant nutrient concentrations are derived from two instruments. The NAS-3X in-situ nutrient analyser takes hourly measurements of nitrate concentration, while lower frequency (daily) measurements of nitrate and silicate concentration are derived from laboratory analysis of water samples collected and preserved by the WMS-2 water sampler. An estimate of phytoplankton concentration (biomass) is obtained twice per hour using a fluorometer measuring chlorophyll fluorescence. To aid interpretation of these data, SmartBuoy...

Horizontal and Vertical Movements of Atlantic cod and European plaice in the North Sea and English Channel from 1996 to 2010 Derived from Data Storage Tags

David Righton
This data is derived from the deployment of archival data storage tags (DST) on Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and European plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) in the North Sea and English Channel. Tags were deployed throughout the time period 1996 – 2010. The dataset includes 107 individual fish each with its own bivariate time series of horizontal (m day-1) and vertical movements (m day-1). Daily geolocation estimates (latitude and longitude) are also provided. The length of each...

Seawater temperature trend analysis for the North East Atlantic (North West European Shelf)

Strategy Data Governance
This gridded data product provides a trend analysis to estimate the changes in Seawater Temperature at sea surface and near sea bed for the North West European Shelf for the period from 1st January 1985 to 30th June 2014 in degree Celsius. Monthly and seasonal trend values were generated by applying a Generalised Additive Model (GAM) on a time series of modelling output data for Temperature at 7 Km spatial resolution from the North West...

Seawater temperature records for the UK Shelf - all Cefas Seawater Temperature Data 1880 - 2014

David Morris
This dataset combines the 17 Cefas Data Sources described separately into a single file containing over 10 million records. Data sources include the Cefas Coastal Temperature Network, Fishing Survey System, Oceanographic Archive, Plankton Survey System, Ferry Route and Ferry Box data, SmartBuoy & Defra WaveNet data, data from divers and fish tags, the Lowestoft Sample management System, specialist cruises and research projects, ScanFish and deployed equipment mounted CTD loggers. The Main area covered is the...
