D1.1 Case studies

Bernd Stahl, Kevin Macnish, Mark Ryan, Anya Gregory, Tilimbe Jiya, Tally Hatzakis & Josephina Antoniou
The SHERPA consortium looked at ten case studies that would give a broad overview of the many
ethical issues faced in current use and implementation of smart information systems (artificial
intelligence and Big Data). Smart information systems (SIS) offer businesses, governments,
customers, and society as a whole, great potential and opportunity to increase profits, automate
tedious jobs, improve services, and create advancements in knowledge and innovation. However,
there are also many potential issues and concerns raised with emerging technologies. SIS...

Lethal Wilt Evolution

Conor Fahy, Fabio Caraffini & Mario Gongora
These two videos show the evolution of lethal wilt over time in the Santa Barbara plantation (Unipalma De Los Llanos, Colombia).

The History.avi animation depicts,on a montly basis, currently infected palms (i.e. RED marks) as well as infected palms in the previous 6 months (i.e. orange marks). The number below "month" in the bottom corner of the animation encodes both month and year: "1809" refers to the 9th month (i.e. September) of 2018, "1402" is the...

Geoff Smith & Yowwares Jeeraruangrattana (Dmu Email)
Podium presentation by Geoff Smith at the conference "Freeze-Drying of Pharmaceuticals and Biologics" in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, Sept 18-21 2018. The presentation describes the use of a dual-electrode, through vial impedance spectroscopy (TVIS) method for the determination of drying rates and the prediction of ice interface and ice base temperatures from which the single vial heat transfer coefficient was calculated.

D1.5 Current Human Rights Frameworks

Andreas Andreou & Stephanie Laulhe Shaelou
Smart Information Systems (SIS), which are a combination of big data analytics and Artificial Intelligence (AI), constitute an integral part of our lives. From Google search, Amazon’s Alexa, surgery robots, digital libraries, location-based devices, affective computing, and human machine symbiosis, almost everybody in high-income regions is affected by SIS on daily basis. Meanwhile, human rights and ethics discussions about SIS are taking place whilst the technologies are already omnipresent. The UK House of Lords, the...

Each .zip archive contains a gallery of infrared photographs (6000x4000) taken with a Nikon 5200 camera. Each photograph was taken by positioning the camera to the "shot" points defined with a grid formed by equally spaced lines (50 mm distance between each other) along each coordinate axis.
Archive names follow the convention "IR_ DATE.zip" where DATE can be either 30-08-2017 or 31-08-2017 and IR stands for infrared.
Photographs names follow the convention:

2019-02-13/14 Lyophilization Summit Prague. Geoff Smith. Podium Presentation

Geoff Smith & Yowwares Jeeraruangrattana (Dmu Email)
Podium presentation by Geoff Smith at the Lyophilization Summit in Prague, February 13-14th 2019, describing the application of through vial impedance spectroscopy in the determination of nucleation temperatures and solidification end points.
TVIS dielectric loss parameters Fpeak and Cpeak appear to offer the opportunity for the registration of the primary nucleation whereas the dielectric storage at low frequency (eg 10 or 100 Hz) allow for the registration of secondary ice nucleation (ie ice growth). In...

Stitched images & masks - August 2017

Johana Florez-Lozano, Fabio Caraffini, Mario Gongora & Carlos Parra
These photographs were taken on the the 30th and the 31st of August 2019.

The image names follow this convention:

Data from 'Economic analysis of ransomware' by Hernandez-Castro, Cartwright and Stepanova (2017)

Edward Cartwright
This is the survey data reported in paper 'Economic analysis of ransomware', by Hernandez-Castro, Cartwright and Stepanova (2017). It is a survey of willingness to pay (WTP) and willingness to accept (WTA) for loss of computer files. 149 participants took part in the survey. For each participant we have gender, age, whether they own a computer, WTP and WTA. For details on how WTP and WTA were elicited please see the paper.

Collaborative methodology for enhancing sustainability in rural communities and the use of land

Fabio Caraffini & Mario Gongora
The new peace process in Colombia is providing a new lease of life to rural communities but raising many issues and challenges, both social and operational. Lands that were in no-go zones are now available for use but have many issues from direct effect from the war such as land mines to indirect such as debris, pollution and exhaustion. On the other hand, technologisation in agriculture is very limited in those regions. To support the...

D1.3 Cyberthreats and countermeasures

Mark Ryan, Kevin Macnish, Tally Hatzakis, Alexey Kirichenko & Andrew Patel
While recent innovations in the machine learning domain have enabled significant improvements in a variety of computer-aided tasks, machine learning systems present us with new challenges, new risks, and new avenues for attackers. The arrival of new technologies can cause changes and create new risks for society (Zwetsloot and Dafoe, 2019) (Shushman et al., 2019), even when they are not deliberately misused. In some areas, artificial intelligence has become powerful to the point that trained...
