A surprising finding related to cybersex and high risk sexual behaviors

Jesús Castro Calvo, Rafael Ballester-Arnal, Maria Dolores Gil-Llario, Beatriz Gil-Julià & Cristina Juárez-Tamargo
Background: Some studies have documented higher rates of risky sexual behaviors among young people who are exposed to online pornography. However, results are inconsistent and the link between cybersex and high risk sexual behavior remains unclear. The aim of this study was to extend current knowledge by analyzing the association between cybersex consumption and several high risk sexual indicators (number of sexual partners, condom use during vaginal intercourse, anal intercourse, etc.) in young people.

Number of BCG bacilli colony forming units (CFUs) on each plate from each experimental group.

Ashwani Kesarwani, Puja Nagpal, Alaknanda Mishra, Rana Zaidi & Pramod Upadhyay
The data show CFUs on each plate along with calculated bacilli load of the tissue.

Supporting evidence-informed priority-setting

John Lavis
This report highlights some of the key insights about how best to support evidence-informed priority setting. It is divided into two parts, the first focuses on the importance of knowing your context as different types of policy decisions will likely warrant different approaches when making and influencing policy decisions to support evidence-informed priority setting. Second, the report provides guidance on how to approach intervening within the defined context. Intervening involves assessing ‘evidence-supply side’ versus ‘evidence-demand...

Distribution patterns and genetic diversity of Cedrela montana Moritz ex Turcz. in Ecuador.

Deforestation and climate change are two of the main threats to tropical forests. The first is largely caused by an unsustainable approach linked to resource acquisition and the second by uncertainty associated with future climate scenarios and their impact on forest dynamics. The problem increases if we take into account that Ecuador reached in 2014 one of the highest deforestation rates in all of South America and temperature increases > 1oC have already been detected...

dnaasm – new tool to assemble repetitive DNA regions

Wiktor Kuśmirek & Robert Nowak
Some parts of the genome are composed of repetitive DNA sequences. Existing genome assemblers reconstruct these repetitive regions using information about the insert size length of paired-end tags.

We propose a modification of the algorithm for DNA de-novo assembly, which uses the relative frequency of reads to properly reconstruct repetitive sequences (tandem repeats). The main advantage of our approach is that tandem repeats, which are longer than the insert size of paired-end tags, can also be...

The development of the Data Stewardship Wizard is a project that is ongoing since 2016.The Wizard gets more and more attention in life sciences as well as other domains where scientists need to efficiently work with data as a key element of their projects. In the last year, we released a new generation of the Wizard with brand new features and increased usability. This development has largely been done as part of the ELIXIR Implementation...
