Beam diagnostics

U Raich
Most beam measurements are based on the electro-magnetic interaction of fields induced by the beam with their environment. Beam current transformers as well as beam position monitors are based on this principle. The signals induced in the sensors must be amplified and shaped before they are converted into numerical values. These values are further treated numerically in order to extract meaningful machine parameter measurements. The lecture introduces the architecture of an instrument and shows where...

Collective isospin-spin excitations and Gamow-Teller strength

The (p, n) reaction at intermediate energies is a sensitive tool for the study of isospin-spin correlations in nuclei. For heavy nuclei the neutron-spectra are at forward angle dominated by transitions corresponding to excitation of collective states carrying a significant part of total sum rule strength. The zero degree spectra give information on the Gamow-Teller strength distribution. The analysis shows that only 30-50% of the strength of observed, and the coupling to the Delta -resonance...

Ion sources for high-power hadron accelerators

Dan Faircloth
Ion sources are a critical component of all particle accelerators. They create the initial beam that is accelerated by the rest of the machine. This paper will introduce the many methods of creating a beam for high-power hadron accelerators. A brief introduction to some of the relevant concepts of plasma physics and beam formation is given. The different types of ion source used in accelerators today are examined. Positive ion sources for producing H+ ions...

Antiproton-proton backward elastic scattering between 1.50 and 2.04 GeV/c

The paper reports preliminary results on the study of 200000 pictures from the 2 m-CERN bubble chamber, especially scanned for elastic events. The differential cross-sections are plotted as a function of cos theta /sub c.m./ for eight momenta, 1.50, 1.56, 1.68, 1.75, 1.80, 1.86, 1.93 and 2.04 GeV/c. Fits have been made firstly with a sum of Legendre polynomials up to degree 11, and secondly with the Frahn- Venter (1964) diffraction model. (9 refs).

Quality assurance for CMS Tracker LV and HV Power Supplies

L Isabella, L Periale, Marco Costa, A Lucchesi, M Sertoli, P Trapani, A Peruzzo & C Landi
This work describes the quality assurance measurements that have been carried out on about 2000 Power Supply Units produced in CAEN technology for the CMS Silicon Tracker Detector. The automate procedure and the characteristics of the dedicated Test Fixture developed for this activity are described in details. Magnetic field tolerance and radiation hardness of Tracker power supply units is also discussed at length.
