This dataset pertains to the study of soil and plant phytoliths from the Eastern Serengeti Plains, specifically the Acacia-Commiphora mosaics from Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania. The soil phytolith transect extends 100 ha and comprises 35 samples. Botanic collection was aimed at investigating the range of species present in the study area, learning about their phytolith production and morphotype characteristics, and comparing the botanical dataset with the soil group. We studied 29 species (20 genera, 15 families)....

Reactive Silicon Data in Hamilton Harbour, Lake Ontario

Christine Ridenour, Philippe Van Cappellen, Chris Parsons, Chris Marvin & Mark Fiztpatrick
This project investigated nutrient silicon cycling in Hamilton Harbour, Lake Ontario. A field sampling program was undertaken to collect water, suspended sediment, and bottom sediment samples from Hamilton Harbour, which were then analysed for dissolved and particulate reactive silicon. Sediment cores were also used in sediment core incubation experiments to determine the flux of silicon from sediments to the water column. This data was collated into a reactive silicon mass balance model to determine silicon...

Hydrometeorological data from Marmot Creek Research Basin, Canadian Rockies

Xing Fang, John Pomeroy, Chris DeBeer, Phillip Harder & Evan Siemens
Meteorological, snow survey, streamflow, and groundwater data are presented from Marmot Creek Research Basin, Alberta, Canada. The basin is a 9.4 km2, alpine-montane forest headwater catchment of the Saskatchewan River Basin that provides vital water supplies to the Prairie Provinces of Canada. It was heavily instrumented, experimented upon and operated by several federal government agencies between 1962 and 1986, during which time its main and sub-basin streams were gauged, automated meteorological stations at multiple elevations...

Morphometrics of Starch Granules from Sub-Saharan Plants and the Identification of Ancient Starch

Julio Mercader, Matthew Abtosway, Robert Bird, Mariam Bundala, Siobhan Clarke, Julien Favreau, Jamie Inwood, Makarius Itambu, Fergus Larter, Patrick Lee, Robert Patalano, Maria Soto, Laura Tucker & Dale Walde
The assumption that taxonomy can be ascertained by starch granule shape and size has persisted unchallenged since the late nineteenth and early twentieth century biochemistry. More recent work has established that granule morphological affinity is scattered throughout phylogenetic branches, morphotype proportions vary within the genus, granules from closely related genera can differ dramatically in shape, and size variations do not reflect phylogenetic relationships. This situation is confounded by polymorphism at the species and tissue level,...

Soil Moisture Data from the Brightwater Creek Pasture Site (2012-2014)

Amber Peterson, Warren Helgason & Andrew Ireson
This dataset includes root-zone and surface soil moisture measurements from a heterogeneous grazed pasture site (containing both Solonetzic (sodic) and Chernozemic (non-sodic) soil) located within the Brightwater Creek watershed (central Saskatchewan). Surveys of surface soil moisture (0–6cm) were conducted on four different measurement days ranging from extreme wet to extreme dry conditions. On each survey, moisture was measured over a 500m by 500m area at a grid spacing of 20m resulting in 625 points. Root-zone...

Aggregate hydraulic conductivity data from site investigations in south-central Saskatchewan, Canada

David M. Ferris, Grant A.G. Ferguson & Gregory Potter
Pleistocene-aged glacial till aquitards are important shallow hydrogeological units across much of the Northern Hemisphere. Characterizing the hydrogeological properties of these aquitards at a regional scale is important for land use planning and resource management. Here, 606 hydraulic conductivity data points from 20 sites collected from 26 reports are compiled. The referencing information, spatial location, hydraulic conductivity test type, and any other information associated with the hydraulic conductivity data is included where possible. After filtering...

Initial Assessment of Bioavailable Strontium at Oldupai Gorge, Tanzania: Potential for Early Mobility Studies

Laura Tucker, Julien Favreau, Makarius Itambu, Fergus Larter, Neduvoto Mollel, Aloyce Mwambwiga, Robert Patalano, Patrick Roberts, Maria Soto & Julio Mercader
Strontium isotope analysis is a useful tool for tracing mobility and migration in past populations. For it to be employed, the 87Sr/86Sr values of the landscape must be well-understood. Bioavailable strontium is a combination of geological and atmospheric strontium available for use by plants and animals. In this study we begin mapping bioavailable strontium values around the Oldupai Gorge region so that this method may be utilized on archaeological hominins and animals in the future....

The dataset contains 0.125 resolution gridded soil texture data for Mackenzie and Nelson-Churchill River Basins. The data has been aggregated from two source datasets, namely Soil Landscapes of Canada 2.2 dataset and STATSGO2 dataset for USA. The final texture data has the minimum, maximum and average percent for sand, clay and organic components of soil per grid cell of the two basins. This data set is particularly created for the use with MESH (Modélisation Environnementale...

Benthic nitrite exchanges in the Seine River (France)

Zahra Akbarzadeh, Anniet Laverman, Fereidoun Rezanezhad, Mélanie Raimonet, Eric Viollier, Babak Shafei & Philippe Van Cappellen
We expanded the reaction network for benthic N cycling in an existing early diagenetic computer code in order to explicitly include the reaction pathways producing and consuming nitrite. Reactive transport calculations are then used to interpret a data set comprising pore water profiles and benthic exchange fluxes of nitrate, nitrite and ammonium collected in the Seine River upstream and downstream of the SAV WWTP. Because of the highly dynamic and heterogeneous nature of streambed sediments,...

Model data for "Irreversible ocean thermal expansion under carbon dioxide removal"

Dana Ehlert & Kirsten Zickfeld
The related study uses a global climate model to explore the extent to which sea level rise due to thermal expansion of the ocean is reversible if the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) declines. It is found that sea level continues to rise for several decades after atmospheric CO2 starts to decline and does not return to the pre-industrial level for over thousand years after atmospheric CO2 is restored to the pre-industrial concentration. The...

Fingerprinting of Quartzitic Outcrops at Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania

María Soto, Julien Favreau, Kathryn Campeau, Tristan Carter, Matthew Abtosway, Pastory Bushozi, Siobhan Clarke, Paul Durkin, Stephen Hubbard, Jamie Inwood, Makarius Itambu, Fergus Larter, Patrick Lee, Aloyce Mwambwiga, Rajeev Nair, Robert Patalano, Laura Tucker & Julio Mercader
The African Early Stone Age record, including that of Olduvai Gorge, reveals widespread evidence for hominin exploitation of quartzose lithic raw materials such as quartzite. However, few studies have sought to characterize these rock types grounded on the assumption that they are not amenable for provenance studies. Through the use of macroscopic, petrographic, and EDXRF analysis, we characterize source material from five quartzitic outcrops belonging to the Mozambique Belt adjacent to Olduvai Gorge. Our results...
