The Impact of Big Data on Modelling & Simulation: Do We Need to Get Big?

Simon J E Taylor
The presentation outlines the main issues that modelling & simulation needs to address if it is to meet the grand challenges of big data analytics. A Sci-GaIA case study is presented showing how science gateways are a critical building block in meeting this challenge. Keynote Presentation at the 2015 Winter Simulation Conference PhD Colloquium.

African Pharmacological Science Gateway: demonstrator of an e-infrastructure community

R Barbera, J Eriksen, Gustafsson. L L , C Masimirembwa, F Spyridonis & S J Taylor
Over the years, under the North-South (N-S) Scientific and Technology transfer drive, many African scientists went for postgraduate training in developed countries such as Sweden, UK, USA, and France. This N-S initiative however did not achieve the technology transfer aspect resulting in the trained African scientists failing to continue with their work on returning to their home institutions. Some invariably return to laboratories and institutions of developed countries making the N-S initiative a conduit of...

Repast Infection Model Experiment 1 Results

Simon J E Taylor
The Repast Infection Model was produced to demonstrate how scientists can use a science gateway to support Open Science. This dataset is the results of running "Experiment 1" with the model. The parameters are: Simulation Period (20), Recovered Count (0), Infected Count (20), Susceptible Count (1500).

EthERNet e-Research Hackfest - Patterns in e-Science Applications

B Becker
The hackfest brings together researchers and infrastructure service developers, in order to bring new applications to bear in scientific research. But what resources will be available to deploy these applications on in a production environment ?And what aspects of applications make for good practice, and for bad practice? Using Design Patterns as an analogy, we investigate patterns in grid and cloud infrastructure usage, data management and application development - but also patterns in research, such...

Programmatic interaction with Open Data Repositories

Carrubba Carla & R Barbera
In this section we well talk about the interaction with Open Data Repositories (based on Invenio). First of all, we will show how submit different types of resource manually through the repository. After that, we will start with the programmatic interaction with Open Data Repository by API for data searching, downloading and uploading. We will have a brief look at the MARCXML tags. At the end, we will see how interact with Open Data repository...

Virtual appliance to simulate an Infection Model implemented with Repast Simphony

R Barbera, A Fabiyi, R Ricceri, Simon J. E. Taylor & M Torrisi
The Repast infection-model is an example of an Agent-Based Simulation Infection Model implemented in Repast Simphony. The aim of the model is to study the behaviour of infections with an annual outbreak with the appropriate input data. It can be further used in the field of health economics to study the cost effectiveness of various infection preventive strategies.
