Echocardiography for early detection of heart disease in high risk diabetic patients

Maria Diana Hartnick
Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease with a significant impact on personal lifestyle and wellbeing. It is associated with a high prevalence of myocardial disease, the early detection of which is important for prevention of disease progression. Although echocardiography is recognised as a leading cardiovascular imaging modality, there has been limited work on its role in the early detection of diabetes-related myocardial dysfunction. The aim of this study was therefore to evaluate the role...

Investigation of the effect of solidification velocity on the quality of single crystal turbine blades

Ekaterina Rzyankina, Dariusz Szeliga & Andrzej Nowotnik
The occurrence of high temperatures in combustion chambers of jet engines and gas turbines has led to the demand for new technologies and new materials for the manufacture of one of the most critical elements of these systems - the turbine blades. These elements have to withstand extreme temperatures for extended periods without loss of mechanical strength, conditions under which many alloys fail. Such failure is ascribed to the combination of high temperatures and high...

The Deployment and Impact of LibGuides at Public Universities in South Africa

Siviwe Bangani & Veliswa Tshetsha
Webometrics techniques were used to establish the extent of deployment and impact of LibGuides at public universities in South Africa using their content, usage, and views. There are 1,166 LibGuides hosted by 16 universities, and published by 299 owners in South Africa giving the country a 0.22% of the world's share of LibGuides, and a 0.22% share of the world's LibGuides owners. Each LibGuide owner in the country owns almost four LibGuides. Close to 70%...

Big data stream analysis: a systematic literature review

Taiwo Kolajo & Justine Daramola
p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 10.0px Helvetica} Recently, big data streams have become ubiquitous due to the fact that a number of applications generate a huge amount of data at a great velocity. This made it difficult for existing data mining tools, technologies, methods, and techniques to be applied directly on big data streams due to the inherent dynamic characteristics of big data. In this paper, a systematic review of big data streams...

Obesity phenotypes and subclinical cardiovascular diseases in a mixed‐ancestry South African population: A cross‐sectional study (南非混合血统人群的肥胖表型与亚临床心血管疾病:一项横向研究)

Tandi Edith Matsha-Erasmus, Maria Diana Hartnick, Yogan Kisten, Rajiv T. Eramus & Andre P. Kengne
Efforts to characterize the disease risk associated withobesity1suggest that related metabolic abnormalitiesare not uniform in all obese persons. The conceptsof“metabolically-healthy-”and“metabolically-abnormal-” normal-weight, overweight and obese havebeen used to characterize the phenotypes resulting fromthe cross-classification of individuals by body mass index(BMI) and metabolic status.2Studies, mostly from devel-oped countries, suggest each phenotype to represent asizable proportion of the population. However, evidenceon their association with cardiovascular disease (CVD)risk is inconclusive, and no study has assessed the preva-lence of obesity...

Figures of experiments conducted to support the numerical analysis of the hydrodynamic mixing characteristics of a rectangular versus a cylindrical mixing crystallizer tank for a membrane distillation apparatus

Everhardus Johannes Smith, Graeme John Oliver & Jeeten Nathoo
Clear polycarbonate replicas of the rectangular tanks were manufactured to visually observe the mixing process in the tanks. Silica particles were used to represent the calcium carbonate crystals in the experiment. The data gathered from these experiments showed that the tanks should be operated between 600 to 750 rpm.
The figure names contain the speed of mixing in RPM either 600 or 750 and the time elapsed from the start of agitation. The .1 represents a...

Types of metrics and statistics from library systems

Veliswa Tshetsha
This data contain types of metrics and statistics from library digital systems. This determines if researchers are making use of the library systems. Libraries can use these metrics and statistics to motivate for continuous subscriptions. It cost libraries to subscribe to these digital platforms therefore usage should bring value in research and education.

Collaboration on LibGuides in public universities in South Africa

Siviwe Bangani & Veliswa Tshetsha
Purpose
This paper uses co-ownership as a proxy for determining the extent of collaboration on LibGuides in public universities in South Africa.Design/methodology/approachThis is a quantitative study that uses webometrics techniques to establish collaboration on LibGuides among librarians in public universities in South Africa. The LibGuide pages of all public universities in the country are visited. Co-ownership of those LibGuides is established by going through the list of co-owners usually situated on the right-hand side menu bar....

Cardiovascular effects of edible oils: a comparison between four popular edible oils

D. Bester, A. J. Esterhuyse, E. J. Truter & J. Van Rooyen
Edible oils form an essential part of the modern diet. These oils play a role as an energy source, and provide the diet with many beneficial micronutrients. Although a popular conception may be that fat should be avoided, certain edible oils as a dietary supplement may play an important role in the improvement of cardiovascular health. CVD has become one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Dietary supplementation with different oils may have beneficial...

Solution Heat Treatment of Single Crystal Castings of CMSX-4 Nickel-base Superalloy

Ekaterina Rzyankina, M Pytel, N Mahomed & A. Nowotnik
An investigation of the microstructure and mechanical properties for heat treated directionally cast rods, produced from the nickel-based superalloy, CMSX-4, is presented. The rods were cast using the Bridgman method for manufacturing single crystal structures. The microstructure of the cast rods consists of γ and γ' precipitates. This microsegregation has a negative effect on the microstructure and, hence, the mechanical properties of the castings. The solution heat treatment of the second generation, single crystal Ni-base...

Rolf Proske, Joanne Arendse, Siviwe Bangani, Phillipa Campbell, Zulaiga Davids, Edene Du Toit, Lynn Kleinveldt, Thundeza Mafungwa & Veliswa Tshetsha
Poster presented at the 34th Annual IATUL Conference in Cape Town International Convention Centre. Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) has during the last decade moved from being a vocational institution to a fully-fledged university, and has consequently also moved to strengthen its research profile. In publication counts of South African institutions drawn from Web of Science, in the periods 1990-1994 and 2004-2008, CPUT, while not recorded in the earlier statistics, ranked 39th out of...
