Computer Aided Testing Methods

Tatiana Statsenko
This project is aimed at verification and reconstruction of model parameters for the simulation of structural surface vibrations and transient deformations (e.g. by the finite element method) using optical methods. Transient deformations can be described by means of time-resolved electronic speckle pattern interferometry. There are two ways of producing a dynamic 3-D model of the deforming surface from an experimentally obtained image sequence of interference patterns. Direct solution of the so-called “inverse problem” has proved...

The Vienna 4x22 Piano Corpus

Werner Goebl
In January and February 1999, 22 professional pianists from Vienna performed four excerpts from the Classic-Romantic repertoire by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Schubert, and Frédéric Chopin on a SE290 computer-controlled Imperial piano by the Viennese piano manufacturer Bösendorfer. The pianists were advanced performance students and professors from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. They were given the scores several days ahead of the recording session to allow to prepare their performances. The recording...

Intonation auf der Es-Klarinette

Manuel Gangl & Alex Hofmann

Transient Phenomena in Single-Reed Woodwind Instruments

Vasileios Chatziioannou
The function of musical instruments has always been under study by physicists, engineers, and scientists in general, not only due to their apparent role in music production, but also because of the compelling physical effects that govern the process of sound generation. To this cause, music acoustics has developed as a science field that aims to study the underlying physics and to carry on asking further research questions, towards the understanding of the observed phenomena....

There’s More to Groove than Bass in Electronic Dance Music: Why Some People Won’t Dance to Techno

Alex Hofmann & Brian Wesolowski
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between audio descriptors for groove-based electronic dance music (EDM) and raters’ perceived cognitive, affective, and psychomotor responses. From 198 musical excerpts (length: 15 sec.) representing 11 subgenres of EDM, 19 low-level audio feature descriptors were extracted. A principal component analysis of the feature vectors indicated that the musical excerpts could effectively be classified using five complex measures, describing the rhythmical properties of: (a) the high-frequency...
