Reactive Silicon Data in Hamilton Harbour, Lake Ontario

Christine Ridenour, Philippe Van Cappellen, Chris Parsons, Chris Marvin & Mark Fiztpatrick
This project investigated nutrient silicon cycling in Hamilton Harbour, Lake Ontario. A field sampling program was undertaken to collect water, suspended sediment, and bottom sediment samples from Hamilton Harbour, which were then analysed for dissolved and particulate reactive silicon. Sediment cores were also used in sediment core incubation experiments to determine the flux of silicon from sediments to the water column. This data was collated into a reactive silicon mass balance model to determine silicon...

Minimum and maximum temperature can be calculated from mean temperature and temperature range. EMDNA merges station observations and reanalysis model outputs to improve the quality of estimates. The dataset is expected to be useful for hydrological and meteorological applications in North America. Two types of datasets are provided by...

Bow River at Banff (05BB001) Stage and Discharge Measurements

Paul H. Whitfield & John Pomeroy
Stage Discharge measurements and metadata for 1091 stage discharge measurements made from 1909 to 1986 were extracted from paper records and combined with the 387 made between 1987 and 2015 that were available in electronic form. Measurements had been recorded in Imperial units from 1909 to 1976; these were extracted and put into electronic form and then converted to metric units.

Responses of juvenile fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) gut microbiota to a chronic dietary exposure of benzo[a]pyrene

Abigail DeBofsky, Yuwei Xie, Jonathan Challis, Markus Brinkmann, Markus Hecker & John Giesy
These data are collected from juvenile fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) that were exposed to benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) as well as fish exposed to a solvent control for two weeks via the diet. The samples were sterilely collected from whole fathead minnow guts and stored at -80°C until DNA and RNA extraction. The guts were used for 16S rRNA sequencing to analyze the impact of BaP on gut microbial communities. Each fish was analyzed independently (samples were...

Differential sex responses of fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) gut microbiota to a short-term environmentally-relevant aqueous exposure to benzo[a]pyrene

Abigail DeBofsky, Yuwei Xie, Chelsea Grimard, Markus Brinkmann, Markus Hecker & John Giesy
Vertebrate gut microbiota are responsible for regulating several beneficial functions, from development of an organism to maintaining energy homeostasis. However, little is known about the impact of chemical exposures on the structure and function of gut microbiota of fishes. To ascertain a link between contaminant exposure and microbial disruption, male and female fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) were aqueously exposed to low concentrations of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) (concentrations ranged from 0.0226 g/L to 1.3 g/L) as well...

Meteorological and hydrological data from the Alder Creek Watershed, Grand River Basin, Ontario.

Andrew J. Wiebe, Paul G. Menkveld, Cailin E. Hillier, Emilie Mesec & David L. Rudolph
The Alder Creek field observatory was instrumented by the Southern Ontario Water Consortium as the middle member of three watersheds with different degrees of urbanization. Field data were collected via the deployment of electronic instruments and manual measurements in the Alder Creek watershed to answer questions related to water management at the watershed scale. Field sites were chosen based on: 1) an attempt to distribute measurement locations spatially throughout the watershed, 2) permissions obtained from...

Data files for \"Tree Swallow selection for wetlands in agricultural landscapes predicted by central-place foraging theory\"

Andrew Elgin, Robert Clark & Christy A. Morrissey
Complete dataset for manuscript entitled "Tree Swallow selection for wetlands in agricultural landscapes predicted by central-place foraging theory". Our study examined Tree Swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) habitat and space use on sites with differing agricultural land use/land cover (cropland-dominated, grassland-dominated, and one “mixed” site with cropland and herbaceous cover). Miniature GPS tags were attached to swallows during the nestling provisioning period, and locational fixes were attempted every 10 minutes from 0500 to 2200 local time, over...

Input and Output Variables for the biogeochemical modeling study of the Lakes Response to Climate Change, Internal Loads and Restoration Measures

Igor Markelov, Philippe Van Cappellen & Raoul-Marie Couture
The main goal of this work is to quantify seasonal effluxes of soluble phosphorus from sediments in lakes and reservoirs by means of mechanistic biogeochemical modelling. The MyLake-Sediment model, available freely on GitHub (https://github.com/biogeochemistry/MyLake_v2_Vansjo), was used to reproduce daily water quality variables and predict sediment-water column exchange fluxes over the boreal Lake Vansjø, Norway. MyLake-Sediment was first used to simulate the impacts of increasing air temperature on algal growth. In another scenario, phosphorus loading from...

Elli Papangelakis & Bruce MacVicar
This project monitors the movement of coarse sediment and morphological change through a newly restored section of Wilket Creek (Toronto), and directly compares bedload transport processes with an adjacent un-restored section. This study presents a means of monitoring bedload transport processes in restored rivers, and results can inform future river restoration designs. Data was collected from an un-restored reach and a restored reach of Wilket Creek, Toronto, Canada. The grain size distribution of the restored...

An ensemble of 500 time series of weekly flows from 1600-2001 for the four sub-basins of the Saskatchewan River Basin generated through disaggregating tree-ring reconstructed flow.

Andrew Slaughter & Saman Razavi
Biennial flow reconstructions generated through multiple linear regression relationships between flow and tree-ring chronologies extending from 1600–2001 were disaggregated to weekly by identifying two-year periods in the naturalised reference flow broadly similar to that of the reconstructed flow. The weekly flow distribution of the identified naturalised reference flow period was used to construct the weekly flow. Scaling methods were used to re-introduce some of the variability in yearly flows lost during the disaggregation process. The...
