The traits included in this dataset are indicative of each species's developmental rate, fecundity, level of contaminant depuration into the egg, body size, longevity, migration strategy, range, habitat type, trophic level, and degree of sociality and sexual competition. Most birds in this dataset are North American species. These data are...

Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment Fourier Transform Spectrometer Level 2 Data v2.2

Chris D. Boone
The Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (ACE) is a Canadian satellite mission for remote sensing of the Earth's atmosphere that was launched into a high-inclination (74°), circular low-earth (650 km from the surface) orbit on August 12, 2003 (Bernath et al., 2006). This orbit gives SCISAT coverage of tropical, mid-latitude, and polar regions, ranging from latitudes 85N to 85S, allowing it to study a range of atmospheric processes. The main goal of ACE is to study the...

Raw data and videos of historical and projected hydrodynamics and water quality in Lake Diefenbaker reservoir under climate change scenarios using the 2D CE-QUAL-W2 model

Amir Sadeghian, Luis Morales-Marin & Karl-Erich Lindenschmidt
Lake Diefenbaker (LD) is a large, multi-purpose, mesotrophic reservoir in the Canadian Prairies. The 2D hydrodynamics and water quality model, CE-QUAL-W2, is implemented to explore how historical (2001-2010) and predicted future (2041-2050 and 2081-2090) hydrological and meteorological conditions may impact the in-reservoir nutrient and water chemistry characteristics of lake Diefenbaker. The LD model is discretized in 87 horizontal segments starting at Saskatchewan highway 4 at the upstream extending to the Gardiner Dam and the Qu’Appelle...

Model code and observational data for the South Saskatchewan River Basin multi-physics CLASS

Matthew K. MacDonald, Richard L. H. Essery & John Pomeroy
A refined land surface scheme was developed for application over the South Saskatchewan River Basin. The Canadian Land Surface Scheme (CLASS) version 3.6 coupled to the Prairie Blowing Snow Model (PBSM) was used as the modelling platform within MESH. A multi-physics version of CLASS-PBSM was developed, consisting of two parameterisation options each for fifteen processes, with focus on winter hydrological processes. Energy balance, soil and snow processes were all considered, and each configuration of the...

Data Files and Code for: Spatio-temporal patterns of crops and agrochemicals in Canada over 35 years

Egina Malaj, Levi Freistadt & Christy A. Morrissey
An analysis of historical data on agrochemical applications (proportion of cropland treated with pesticides and fertilizers) and crop types (proportion of cropland in specific crop groups) to identify and interpret spatial and temporal trends in Canada’s agricultural practices. Data used were part of the Canadian Census of Agriculture, spanning eight censuses and 35 years (1981-2016), across more than 260 census division units. Raw data from: Statistics Canada, Census of Agriculture, 2016. Reproduced and distributed on...

Instantaneous Iodine-Assisted DNAzyme Cleavage of Phosphorothioate RNA

Po-Jung Jimmy Huang, Woohyun Jennifer Moon & Juewen Liu
We show that Ce13d DNAzymes can use non-electrostatic interactions to assist RNA cleavage by making simple Phosphorothioate (PS) modifications at the cleavage junction. In this case, Iodine can replace the role of a metal cofactor, acting directly on the scissile phosphate group. This finding has broadened the scope of DNAzyme catalysis. This DNAzyme was further engineered for fluorescence-based I2 detection with a detection limit of 4.7 nM. In addition, Oxidation of I− with Fe3+ produced...

Shallow Groundwater Intrinsic Vulnerability Map for Northeast BC

Diana M. Allen & Shannon Holding
Simon Fraser University developed a Shallow Groundwater Intrinsic Vulnerability Map of Northeast British Columbia using the DRASTIC assessment method. The assessment was conducted in response to mounting concerns surrounding water management and protection in Northeast BC in relation to shale gas development. The mapping characterizes the intrinsic vulnerability of near surface geological materials to contamination originating at land surface. Format of data is NAD 83 BC Environment Albers and content type is GIS data. Data...

Infants' looking to surprising events: When eye-tracking reveals more than looking time

H. Henny Yeung, Stephanie Denison & Scott P. Johnson
Research on infants' reasoning abilities often rely on looking times, which are longer to surprising and unexpected visual scenes compared to unsurprising and expected ones. Few researchers have examined more precise visual scanning patterns in these scenes, and so, here, we recorded 8- to 11-month-olds' gaze with an eye tracker as we presented a sampling event whose outcome was either surprising, neutral, or unsurprising: A red (or yellow) ball was drawn from one of three...

RNA metabarcoding to assess zooplankton community response to environmental influence in boreal lake experimental enclosures

Phillip Ankley, Yuwei Xie, Sonya Havens, Lisa Peters, Gregg Tomy, Lauren Timlick, Jose Luis Rodriguez-Gil, John Giesy & Vince Palace
Zooplankton metabarcoding can provide a high-throughput method for characterizing community response to environmental stressors. There are issues, however, with inferring actual response to stressors due to PCR biases, DNA persistence, and the inability to capture live organisms. Here, we used normalized activity, namely RNA metabarcoding normalized by DNA metabarcoding, to characterize the zooplankton community response to environmental influence. DNA and RNA metabarcoding was also applied in the context of assessing response of the zooplankton community...
