Science,technology and society

G. Giacomelli & R. Giacomelli
We shall discuss some aspects of science and technology, their increasing role in the society, the fast advances in modern science, the apparent decrease of interest of the young generation in basic sciences, the importance of proper science popularization for better public education and awareness in scientific fields.

Considerazioni sul papiro della donna e dell'asino (POxy LXX 4762).

Enzo Puglia
The article is a study on POxy LXX 4762, that presents some new readings, bibliological observations about the volumen, a new proposal about prosody and some considerations about the narrative and literary genre of the text.

Implicit Partial Differential Equations: different approaching methods

Giovanni Pisante
Implicit Partial Differential Equations: different approaching methods PhD Thesis of Giovanni Pisante Abstract In the last few decades the interest of scientists in nonlinear analysis has been constantly increasing and nonlinear partial differential equations have become one of the main tools of modern mathematical analysis. In this thesis we deal with a family of nonlinear partial differential equations, the so called ”implicit partial differential equations”. The problem of solving this type of equations has been...

EFFECTS OF AGRONOMIC VARIABLES AND HINERITANCE ON AROMATIC COMPONENTS IN BASIL AND CHILI PEPPER

Simona Vallone
This PhD Thesis focuses on how aroma profile in crops is affected by agronomic and genetic variables. In the first chapter we considered the effects of salt stress on main morphological and physiological traits of two cultivars of sweet basil (Genovese and Napoletano) Specifically, we focused on compositional changes in aroma profile and their possible significance in adaptation and tolerance to the oxidative stress. In the second chapter, we considered the aroma profile of two...

Nuovi passages. Benjamin e la città contemporanea

Filippo La Porta

MACRO as a Telescope for Neutrino Astronomy

INFN Collaboration
We use a sample of 990 upward-going muons, induced preliminary by atmospheric neutrinos, to search for neutrinos of astrophysical origin. No evidence has been found using the event direction information. Flux limits of the order of 10_{-15} cm_{-2} s_{-1} are imposed on current models for candidate point-sources. A spacetime correlation search has been undertaken between 2328 BATSE gamma ray burst (GRBs) and MACRO upward-going muons.

Fingerprints of the Very Early Universe

Giovanni Imponente
During the work developed in the PhD Thesis, it has been faced a number of problems concerning theoretical cosmology especially with respect dynamical evolution of the Universe near the cosmological singularity. Wide space has been devoted to the study of the subtle question concerning the covariance chaoticity, which led to important issues favourable to the independence of the ‘’chaos’’ with respect to the choice of the temporal gauge. Such analysis found its basis either on...

Essays on political economy

Alessandro Belmonte
While a vast literature has been collected pointing out the role of the human capital on economic growth, a few has been said, in Economics, on the mechanism through which education directly impacts on democracy. The present dissertation proposes a novel microfoundation of this nexus based on the paramount role of education as economic growth engine and determinant of political participation. The first two works introduce elements of political psychology in order to shed lights...

Eikonalise minijet model Predictions for Cross-Sections of Photon Induced Processes

R.M. Godbole & G. Pancheri
In this talk we present the results of an analysis of total and inelastic hadronic cross-sections for photon induced processes in the framework of an eikonalised minijet model(EMM). We fix the various input parameters to the EMM calculations by using the data on photoproduction cross-sections and then make predictions for σ(γγ→hadrons) using same values of the parameters. We then compare our predictions with the recent measurements of σ(γγ→hadrons) from LEP.We also show that in the...

High sensitive sensing by effective immobilization of UV photo-activated antibodies

Riccardo Funari
Nowadays there is a strong interest in precise and reliable measurement tools suitable for quantifying physical, chemical, and biological properties. Biosensors face this problem by exploiting the intrinsic specificity provided by biological sensitive molecules to reveal the presence of the compound of interest. In particular, proteins like antibodies have a dominant role in biosensor development since they are selected by host immune system to efficiently bind foreign species including bacteria, viruses and toxins. Biomolecules involved...

PALMITOYLETHANOLAMIDE, AN ENDOGENOUS PPAR-ALPHA AGONIST, MODULATES NEUROSTEROIDS DE NOVO SYNTHESIS

Oscar Sasso
Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), a member of fatty-acid ethanolamide family, is an endogenous neuromodulator with a broad spectrum of pharmacological properties, including analgesic (Calignano et al., 1998, 2001), anti-inflammatory (Costa et al., 2002; D’Agostino et al., 2007), anticonvulsant (Lambert et al., 2001) and antiproliferative (Di Marzo et al., 2001) effects. Less investigated are the functions of PEA in the central nervous system (CNS), where PEA is present in detectable levels (Cadas et al., 1997), showing diurnal variation...
