The (inter)linguistic ecology of education / La (inter)lingva ekologio de la edukado

Mark Fettes
ABSTRACT The text is a revised version of a public lecture delivered in Parma,
Italy, on February 9, 2010. It outlines a definition of linguistic ecology and
analyzes the role of the formal education system in the linguistic ecology of
modernity. The shift from solid to liquid modernity is shown to have farreaching
implications for schools and for languages that in turn are bound up
with the ecological health of the planet. I argue that interlinguistics can yield
important insights into...

I fantasmi e i corpi.

Mario Maffi
The article shows the development of a distinctive Latino cultural tradition, linked to the immigration to the United States both from bordering Mexico (Mexican American immigrants, or chicanos) and from Puerto Rico (immigrants from la isla mainly to New York City, soon to be known as Nuyoricans). It retraces the complex and dramatic dynamics of both immigration trends, from the late 19th century to the late 20th century, and explores their cultural effects, both in...

Isabella Maria Zoppi
Gianmaria Testa's album Da questa parte del mare (2006) expresses a fifteen-year-long meditation about the theme of the great migrations which have marked the Twentieth Century. That same theme is considered by Erri De Luca as the only possible, epic narration of the contemporary world. On the one hand, Testa's project finds its starting point from the song-writer's capacity of observing and interpreting common stories as well as from his considerations about the changing of...

Oltre l’Oriente e l’Occidente. l’orientalismo di Tawfīq al-Ḥakīm

Girolamo Pugliesi
Terms like "East" and "West" are metaphors rather than categories in a technical sense. In particular, the metaphor of "East" has played a decisive role in the development of "orientalistic disciplines" and has also influenced the so-called Eastern populations. The analysis of the literary production of one of the greatest exponents of Egyptian culture in the Twentieth Century - Tawfiq al-Hakim (1898-1987) - will allows us to describe how he modified the vision of the...

“The Mysterious Other”: Carter’s Japanese Reflections

Anna Pasolini
Angela Carter’s Japanese experience (1970-1971) profoundly affected the writer, influencing all her following works. The collections Nothing Sacred (1982) and Fireworks: Nine Profane Pieces (1974), gathering respectively journalistic writings and short stories, show how the Japanese years prompted to strengthen her criticism towards the Western patriarchal tradition and to codify a new paradigm for the representation and enactment of performative female identity(-ies).
As it has been argued, Carter’s perspective is that of a Western tourist, looking...

Orientalism Now: Lebanese History, Identity and Alterity

Marwan Anthony Nader & Myrna Alexandra Nader
In this essay we apply Edward Said’s theory of Orientalism to a study of Lebanese culture and identity. The starting point is pedagogical, the intellectual license assumed by western thinkers in constructing, interpreting and articulating the history of the East. However, does this theory help us to understand the crisis of identity that has been the source of so much conflict in Lebanon in the past?
What we contend is that though undeniably Said’s Orientalism...

Paola Catenaccio
This paper addresses the topic of rewriting in journalistic discourse by examining the typical textual features of the press release, one of the most commonly used journalistic sources. Journalism has long being recognised as being based on reproductive writing practices (Jakobs 2003), as it consists, as Bell (1991: 41) puts it, “of previously composed text reworked into text news”. In this process of rewriting, a key role is played by sources. While their use (and...

Textual equivalence in the translation of specialized languages: discourse adherences and dissimilarities

Rita Salvi
Assuming that translation is necessary in all specialized languages for either informative or even persuasive purposes as well as for popularizing objectives, this contribution considers the translation needs of two types of specialized languages, legal English and English for business and management. Their requirements, strictly connected with their specific discourse communities, are analysed from the point of view of a linguist involved in an interdisciplinary scientific group, which represents a particular situation in non-literary, non-linguistic...

Francesca Santulli
The paper discusses the fundamental characters of terminologies, with special reference to language science. The theory of language and linguistics put forth by Herman Paul (1846-1921) is then examined, focusing on the classification of sciences illustrated in the seminal theoretical essay of the German philologist, Prinzipien der Sprachgeschichte. The analysis of Paul’s work and of the terms used brings forth the implications of this classification, which aimed to give value to linguistics under a new...

Riscritture appropriate e approprianti. Traduzione e revisione del testo letterario

Franca Cavagnoli
Both the translation and the revised version of a literary text give rise to similar issues, for in both cases one can adopt a strategy of either appropriate rewriting or appropriating rewriting. In the former case, the tendency is to respect the properties and peculiar qualities of the Other; in the latter, the tendency is to manipulate and distort the text, to reduce the Other to the Self and not to contemplate the creative potentialities...
