Altimeter Corrected Elevations, Version 2 (ACE2)

Berry, P. A. M.; Smith, R.; Benveniste, J.
The Altimeter Corrected Elevations, Version 2 (ACE2) data set, is the Global Digital Elevation Model (GDEM) created by using multi-mission Satellite Radar Altimetry with the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). It was created by synergistically merging the SRTM data set with Satellite Radar Altimetry within the region bounded by 60°N and 60°S. Over the areas lying outside the SRTM latitude limits, other sources have been used including Global Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) and...

Report on Antarctic surface hydrology workshop, LDEO, 2018

Jonathan Kingslake, Alison Banwell, Robin Bell, Indrani Das, Robert Deconto, Jan Lenaerts, Christian Schoof, Marco Tedesco & Luke Trusel
In February 2018, we hosted a workshop on Antarctic Surface Hydrology and Future Ice-shelf Stability at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Palisades, New York. Funding for the workshop was provided by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Antarctic Glaciology Program (award number: 1743326). The aims of the workshop were to: (1) establish the state-of-the-science of Antarctic surface hydrology; (2) identify key science questions raised by observations and theoretical studies of Antarctic surface hydrology, and (3) move the...

The 2010 Applied Linguistics and Language Education (APPLE) Award Winning Papers

Amanda Gardner
“Why am I learning this language? How is my language learning affected by my attitudes and my context?” For the average second language (L2) learner, these questions are probably not often considered in such an explicit fashion. For L2 educators and L2 motivation researchers, however, these student-centered questions are urgent and ever-present. From my own experience, teaching English to speakers of other languages across different contexts has presented vastly differing pictures of L2 learner motivation....

Plenary Speeches Given by Prof. Nick Ellis and Dr. Boping Yuan at the Inaugural Conference of the Teachers College, Columbia University Roundtable in Second Language Studies (TCCRISLS)

Adrienne Wai Man Lew
Students from our doctoral seminar in Second Language Acquisition (SLA), guided by the vision from Prof. ZhaoHong Han, organized the world’s first conference on the acquisition of Chinese as a second or foreign language, which took place from September 30 to October 2, 2010. As noted by Teachers College President Susan Fuhrman in her opening speech for the conference, “there could not be a better moment to focus on the growing role that China and...

An Interview with APPLE Lecture 2011 Guest Speaker Prof. Tom Cobb

Yayun Anny Sun, Mi Sun Park & Adrienne Wai Man Lew
The past decade has witnessed the exponential growth of technologies for vocabulary learning, and a revived interest in the applications of corpus linguistics. The TESOL/AL Web Journal team (represented by Anny Sun and Mi Sun Park) was thrilled to meet Prof. Tom Cobb, the APPLE Lecture speaker this year, for an informative session about his expertise in these two areas. One of the most well-known accomplishments of Prof. Cobb is his website, The Compleat Lexical...

Japanese Newspapers

David Flath
In 2017, Japanese newspaper advertising revenue, adjusted for inflation, was only half as great as at its 1997 mini-peak. Japanese newspaper circulation also peaked in 1997, and in the two decades since then has fallen by about one-fourth (counting a morning-and-evening subscription as two, by one-fifth if counting it as one). Based on the inferences in this paper, underlying these recent changes in Japanese newspaper revenue and circulation is an 83% decrease in the demand...

Gridded Population of the World, Version 3 (GPWv3): Land and Geographic Unit Area Grids

Center For International Earth Science Information Network-CIESIN-Columbia University; Centro Internacional De Agricultura Tropical-CIAT
The Gridded Population of the World, Version 3 (GPWv3) Land and Geographic Unit Area Grids measure land areas in square kilometers and the mean unit size (population-weighted) in square kilometers. The land area grid permits the summation of areas (net of permanent ice and water) at the same resolution as the population density, count, and urban-rural grids. The mean unit size grids provides a quantitative surface that indicates the size of the input unit(s) from...

Laboratory Hyperspectral Reflectance Data of Central Transantarctic Mountain Rocks and Sediments

Mark Salvatore
This data set contains reflectance spectra (350 - 2500 nm) of a range of rocks and sediments from the Central Transantarctic Mountains. Data were acquired using an Analytical Spectral Devices (ASD) FieldSpec4 high-resolution spectrometer under illumination with a high-output halogen bulb, with illumination and observation angles fixed at 0 and 30 degrees off-nadir, respectively. Data were acquired for the purposes of validation and 'ground truthing' of orbital multispectral data.

U.S. Population Grids (Summary File 1), 2000: Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, Alpha Version

Seirup, L.; Yetman, G.
The U.S. Population Grids (Summary File 1), 2000: Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, Alpha Version contains an ARC/INFO Workspace with grids of demographic data from the year 2000 census. The grids have a resolution of 30 arc-seconds (0.0083 decimal degrees), or approximately 1 square km. The gridded variables are based on census block geography from Census 2000 TIGER/Line Files and census variables (population, households, and housing variables). This data set is produced by the Columbia...

We Have to Be There Because We Have to Be There - The Future of U.S. Engagement

Lincoln A. Mitchell
The extent of U.S. commitment across the globe, which was once a sign of the American ascendancy, now bears many signs of being part of America's decline. This will likely become more apparent and problematic if the economy does not recover. As local and national governments are stressed and basic domestic needs become more and more difficult for governments to afford, it is likely that voices calling for a more modest foreign policy with fewer...

The U.S. Census Grids (Summary File 3), 1990 contain grids of demographic and socioeconomic data from the year 1990 U.S. census in ASCII and geotiff formats. The grids have a resolution of 30 arc-seconds (0.0083 decimal degrees), or approximately 1 square km. The gridded variables are based on census block geography from Census 1990 TIGER/Line Files and census variables (population, households, and housing variables).
