Micro-scale interactions between Arabidopsis root hairs and soil particles control soil erosion

Claire Grierson, Bethany Eldridge & Emily Larson
Soil is essential for sustaining life on earth. Plant roots play a crucial role in stabilising soil and minimising erosion, although these mechanisms are still not completely understood. Consequently, identifying and breeding plant traits to enhance erosion resistance is challenging. Root hair mutants in Arabidopsis thaliana were studied using three different quantitative methods to isolate their effect on root-soil cohesion. We present compelling evidence that microscale interactions of root hairs with surrounding soil increase its...

This study was a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of facial emotion recognition ability, conducted in a sample of 2560 participants who attended the Age 24 Clinic of the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). Emotion recognition was assessed using a computer-based six alternative forced choice task, testing the recognition of happiness, anger, sadness, disgust, fear and surprise. The outcome variable is total hits (number of correctly categorised faces out of 96).

Data from TARGET cohort study (subset)

Alastair Hay
The NIHR 'TARGET' Programme for Applied Research started in 2010 and completed in April 2016. Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) in children present a major problem to health care services internationally. The overall aim of the Programme was to improve the quality of care given to children presenting to primary care with RTIs. The Programme consisted of five Workstreams (WS) using mixed methods to: review existing data in WS1; explore the experiences of parents and clinicians...

Effects of acute alcohol consumption on emotion recognition in high and low trait aggressive drinkers

Andrew Eastwood, Ian Penton-Voak, Marcus Munafo & Angela Attwood
This study investigated the effects of alcohol consumption on emotional face processing in social alcohol drinkers selected to be high or low in trait aggression. Emotion recognition of six emotions (happy, sad, angry, disgust, surprise and fear) was measured using a six-alternative forced choice (6AFC) task. Bias in the interpretation of ambiguous emotional expressions was measured using a two-alternative forced choice (2AFC) tasks presenting angry-happy and happy-sad emotional morphs. The study was pre-registered on the...

State anxiety and alcohol choice: Evidence from experimental and online observational studies

Maddy Dyer, Alexander Board, Lee Hogarth, Steph Suddell, Jon Heron, Matthew Hickman, Marcus Munafo & Angela Attwood
This study investigated the relationships between state anxiety and alcohol-related outcomes (primarily alcohol choice), and explored whether drinking to cope motives moderate these relationships. Two experiments using the 7.5% CO2 challenge to experimentally induce anxiety (Studies 1 and 2), and an observational study (Study 3) (Ns = 42, 60, 219, respectively), were used to triangulate findings.

Seth Bullock & Matthew Potts
This dataset contains the questions used in the survey entitled "When we attempt to design and engineer a novel system, which aspects of the system’s complexity are most significant for the project’s success or failure?", distributed to members of the International Council of Systems Engineers (INCOSE) between 11th March 2019 to 10th June 2019. The data is used to contribute towards a PhD in Systems Engineering being carried out at the University of Bristol as...

Data from study 'Ultrasonographic Assessment of Gastric Emptying Following Water Ingestion in Healthy Volunteers'

Chris Thompson
Current guidance on pre-operative fasting for clear fluids to reduce aspiration risk may result in unnecessary dehydration. Guidance and practice vary with more liberal fluid regimes currently being advocated. In this randomised single blinded crossover study we used an established ultrasound protocol to measure the gastric volume of 15 healthy volunteers following the 2011 European Society of Anaesthesia fasting guidelines (nil-by-mouth two hours before induction of anaesthesia) and the more liberal 2005 Scandinavian guidelines (150mL...

Data from Bioaerosol Longevity (10-2020)

Jonathan Reid, Allen Haddrell & Mara Otero Fernandez
The airborne transmission of infection relies on the ability of pathogens to survive aerosol transport as they transit between hosts. Understanding the parameters that determine the survival of airborne microorganisms is critical to mitigating the impact of disease outbreaks. Conventional techniques for investigating bioaerosol longevity in vitro have systemic limitations that prevent the accurate representation of conditions that these particles would experience in the natural environment. Here, we archive data from a new approach that...
