British human rights organisations and Soviet dissent, 1965-1985

Mark Hurst
This thesis develops the literature on the role of human rights in the Cold War by highlighting the impact of British human rights organisations in the response to Soviet dissent. It argues that human rights groups played an essential role in compiling and distributing information on Soviet dissenters to all levels of British society. These groups all held empiricism at the centre of their campaigns, utilising an array of information to support their activism. This...

Experiments on Charitable Giving: Study of the impact of restricted choice and imperfect informaion on warm glow givers

Zarak Mirza
In some instances, charities insist on donors giving more than some fixed, minimum amount. In many other instances, charities frame appeals for funds in a way that suggests there is a minimum desirable donation. So, what are the effects on charitable giving if a minimum donation is required? We first provide a simple theoretical model that shows the effects are ambiguous. Some people are predicted to give more to the charity, some less and the...

Reading for the Subject: Plots of Desire in the Work of Alain Robbe-Grillet and Marguerite Duras

Patricia Hodges
The purpose of this study is to explore literary representations of the human subject in the work of Alain Robbe-Grillet (1922–2008) and Marguerite Duras (1914–1996), and to do so using a modified, updated version of Peter Brooks’s influential theorization of plot in terms of desire. Both ‘subject’ and ‘representation’ will receive critical attention; in particular, the relation of ‘subject’ to ‘character’ will be explored. Post-Cartesian traditions tend to ground definitions of the subject in particular...

European Governments' Questionable Response: An Investigation into the Effects of Anti-Refugee Policies on Extremism in Europe

Cameron Emanuel-Burns
In light of the European migrant crisis, questions have been raised over the manner in which European countries have responded to the increase in refugees requiring settlement into the host state; with an upsurge in restrictive policies being witnessed. However, there is a lack of research into the effects of such policies. Therefore, this thesis tests the relationship between anti-refugee policies and extremism. This is achieved by analysing the effects of obstructive refugee policies (data...

War and Violence

Cassandra Krauss
This article reads David Treuer's 2016 novel Prudence as Indigenous war fiction. Prudence collapses the distinctions between battle- and home-front, between past and present, between right and wrong. This collapse allows for an exploration of violence and war and its role in establishing and maintaining nationhood. Examining the role of Indigenous bodies within this context extends the cultural and political implications of war fiction beyond a mere critique of war in its immidiacy; instead it...

'Living the Dream' Cosmopolitan Post-Austerity Portuguese Migrants in London and the Desire for a Good Life

Lisa Victoria Franks
This thesis asks how highly educated Portuguese migrants in London experience and embody the desire to live a 'good life'. In answering this question, I also explore the effect this desire has on the way my research participants relate to others in the context of social and economic changes wrought by the 2008 financial crisis and the years leading up to it. Drawing on nearly three years of anthropological fieldwork in London and Portugal, the...

RIGHT TO STRIKE

Afrida Islam
Striking, overtime bans and refusing to carry out certain tasks[1] are collective forms of actions that can arise from workplace disputes. These industrial actions are of fundamental importance: the temporary halt in work production leverages a demand to enforce workers’ rights. Despite this, the UK does not recognise the legal right to withdraw labour. Instead, the UK’s “right to strike” is said to depend on a complex statutory scheme[2]. This article will analyse a variety...

Investigation of Translational Reprogramming during Transient and Stable Expression of Monoclonal Antibodies in Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells

Charlotte Godfrey &
Translational reprogramming and mRNA translation e ciency greatly in uence global protein synthesis, cell proliferation and growth; important parameters in de ning recombinant protein expression yields. Polysome pro ling is a widely-used technique to analyse mRNA transla- tion and its e ciency that provides a snapshot of ribosomes loaded on mRNA transcripts at any particular time. A higher number of polysomes present on a given mRNA suggests that the mRNA is being more heavily translated...

Memristor Content Addressable Memory: Theory, Design and Application

Wanlong Chen
The memristor has been proposed as the fourth circuit element. Among the emerging nano-technologies, the memristor has become a very promising candidate for building storage structures because of its shorter switching time, higher capacity and lower power consumption. In this thesis, I will first introduce a new memristor model with controllable window functions, which is more authentic and flexible than those existing memristor models. Then I will present my novel design of a Memristor Content...

'Swinging the Lamp': The Watch Manager's Career, Role and Occupational Identity within the Modernising Agenda of the UK Fire and Rescue Service

Sarah Jane O'Connor
This research focuses on the career and work identity of watch managers in the Fire and Rescue Service (FRS). Their role is to manage firefighters who are infamously known in political circles to possess grass root cultures that remain resistant to forms of change and modernisation. Watch managers are not only tasked with leading emergency teams at incidents but they are also at the receiving end of a relentless stream of political pressure to achieve...

Remembering in Times of Crisis: Resisting the Politics of Forgetting in Contemporary Greece.

Eirini Glynou Lefaki
Having as a starting point the recent financial crisis in Greece, the thesis explores the question of what it means to remember. Employing from the arts the method of collage, the question on memory is examined in six chapters, each one trying to answer this question from a different perspective. Similarly to a collage where contrasting objects co-exist, the thesis consists of six chapters 'pasted' together in an attempt to draw a picture of remembering...

Hoktiwe (for L. Rain Prud’homme-Cranford)

Jeffery U. Darensbourg
This is a cento composed using extracted sentences from both the 1932 and 2019 published dictionaries of Ishakkoy, also known as Atakapan, a dormant Indigenous language from Louisiana and Texas. The corpus of texts in the language is small, however the published materials have hundreds of example sentences. These were extracted and used to make new compositions, presenting a model for corpus expansion and creative composition in an Indigenous language.

The Irish Party System : A Criticism of Sartori's Contradictory Approach

David Alan Gatley
The idea for writing this dissertation came to me after reading Giovanni Sartori's book, "Parties and Party Systems". In reading this book it soon became obvious to me that Sartori's ideas about Eire (The Irish Republic) are, to say the least, contradictory. The purpose then of this dissertation was to attempt to test how well Sartori's model of party systems could be applied to the Irish case. That is, to answer the question: does the...

International disputes must still be solved by political means

Andrew Emerson Clarke
This article considers the (in)ability of international law to ensure compliance from United Nations (UN) Member States, absent political influence. It examines whether concepts such as sovereign equality, normativity and concreteness give legal authority to international law, and further whether this ‘authority’ is respected by Member States and strictly enforced by UN governing bodies and international courts. The article explains that where sovereign rights or national interests collide the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is...
