Aerial Surveys of Harbor Seals in Prince William Sound, Alaska: 1989 - 2001

Kathryn Frost, Sara Iverson, Lloyd Lowry, Mike Simpkins & Jay Ver Hoef
Study History: Restoration Project 01064 began in 1993 as a continuation of the initial post-spill study effort conducted as Marine Mammal Study Number 5 (Assessment of Injury to Harbor Seals in Prince William Sound, Alaska, and Adjacent Areas) in 1989 through 1991 and reclassified as Restoration Study Number 73 (Harbor Seal Restoration Study) in 1992. A final report was issued in 1994 for the combined Marine Mammal Study Number 5 and Restoration Study Number 73,...

Toward Long-Term Monitoring of the Gulf of Alaska Ecosystem, GAK1 Mooring Freshwater Discharge data, Seward, Alaska (1970-2012)

& Thomas C. Royer
This program continues a 40(+) year time series of temperature and salinity measurements at hydrographic station GAK 1. The data set, which began in 1970, now consists of monthly CTDs and a mooring with 6 - 7 temperature/conductivity recorders throughout the water column, a fluorometer and nitrate sensor at 20 m depth and a nitrate sensor at 150 m depth. The project monitors five important Alaska Coastal Current ecosystem parameters and to quantify and understand...

Salmon escapement estimates at the Little Waterfall barrier bypass, Afognak Island, Alaska: 1995 - 1998

Steven Honnold, Jim Richardson & Joe Sullivan
Surveys were conducted in 1992-93 at Little Waterfall Creek (LWC), Afognak Island, to evaluate instream habitat and potential stock restoration techniques for wild salmon stocks. Data indicated that LWC contained significant amounts of spawning habitat that were underutilized by pink and coho salmon due to an ineffective barrier bypass structure. The project priorities were to renovate the bypass to reduce gradients and design resting pools to minimize water velocity. The bypass renovation was completed in...

Pacific Herring (Clupea pallasi) Otolith Microchemistry Data, Sitka Sound, Alaska (2007-2008)

Heather Meuret-Woody & Nate Bickford
The primary objective of this project was to obtain information leading to better identification of essential fish habitat in Prince William Sound. By using trace element signatures of edge portions of juvenile herring otoliths, we identified the otolith chemical signature of individual rearing bays within Sitka Sound. We used trace element signatures of edge portions of adult herring otoliths to identify the otolith chemical signature of spawning areas within Sitka Sound. We also used trace...

USA National Phenology Network (USA-NPN) Plant and Animal Phenology Data for the United States

In response to the growing need to understand the response of plant and animal species to environmental variation and climate change and to develop a widespread baseline against which future phenological change may be measured, a consortium of scientists and agencies organized the USA-NPN, with a mandate to collect and share phenology data. More information on the USA-NPN can be found at http://www.usanpn.org/about. As of January 1, 2013, the dataset contains phenology data on 591...

The coastal habitat injury assessment in Prince William Sound, Cook Inlet-Kenai Peninsula and Kodiak-Alaska Peninsula, Alaska: 1989 - 1991

Ray Highsmith, Lyman McDonald, Dale Strickland, Wallace Erickson, Michael Stekoll & Willard Barber
Study History: Comprehensive assessment of coastal habitat was initiated as Coastal Habitat Study No. 1 in 1989. Phase I was conducted in summer 1989/spring 1990 and involved site selection/ground truthing. Phase II involved intensive evaluation of study sites to determine extent of injury to natural resources in supratidal, intertidal and subtidal areas. Phase II commenced in the fall of 1989 and continued through the summer of 1991. The supratidal component was completed in 1991 and...

Organizing, Contextualizing, and Storing Legacy Research Data: A Case Study of Data Management for Librarians

Katherine O'Bryan Brianna Marshall

Blue Oak Ranch Reserve

& Michael Hamilton
Streams on the ranch support healthy stands of riparian vegetation in addition to aquatic species. They are important habitat for migratory birds and may be migratory corridors for numerous aquatic and terrestrial animal species. At least 73 vascular plant families are found at BORR, almost 80 percent of which are native. Plant communities include blue oak woodland, valley oak woodland, black oak woodland, coast live oak woodland, riparian forest, chamise chaparral, Diablan sage scrub, nonnative...
