Assessment of Bivalve Recovery on Treated Mixed-Soft Beaches In Prince William Sound, 1989-1997

Dennis Lees & William Driskell
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration treatment effects studies from 1989 through 1997 suggested that bivalve assemblages on beaches in Prince William Sound treated with high-pressure washing were severely injured in terms of abundance, species composition, and function. Restoration Project 040574 assessed the generality and persistence of this apparent injury to this assemblage. We found that the initial conclusions were accurate, indicating that a considerable proportion of mixed-soft beaches in treated areas of the sound remained...

Smolt age, weight and length (1990-1997) and sockeye salmon escapement (1983-1993) in Kodiak Island lakes, Alaska

Dana Schmidt, Kenneth Tarbox, Bruce Barrett, Gary Kyle, Patricia Nelson, Jim Edmundson, Bruce King, Steven Honnold, Linda Brannian, Charles Swanton, Patrick Shields, John Edmundson, Patricia Roche, Stan Carlson, Lewis Coggins & Nicholas Sagalkin
Study History: This investigation was initiated with a detailed study plan that subsequently became Fish/Shellfish Study Number 27. The initial research plan coupled parallel investigations on Kenai/Skilak Lakes in Cook Inlet with Red and Akalura lakes on Kodiak Island. A final report on F/S No. 27 was published by D.C. Schmidt and K.E. Tarbox within the Fisheries Rehabilitation, Enhancement and Development Report series (No. 136) titled Sockeye Salmon Overescapement. Subsequent studies (93002, 94258, 95258, 96258...

Resistance of naturally spawned pink salmon eggs to mechanical shock

John Thedinga, Mark Carls, Jacek Maselko, Ronald Heintz &
Routine hydraulic sampling of pink salmon eggs (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) is the subject of a long-running dispute over impacts of the Exxon Valdez oil spill on embryo survival in Prince William Sound, Alaska, because relationships between the time of spawning, sensitivity of eggs to mechanical damage, and sample timing were unclear. Previous laboratory or hatchery studies demonstrate that resistance of eggs to mechanical damage increases with maturity, but applicability to natural populations requires an understanding of...

Angelo Coast Range Reserve - Information Sheet

& Peter Steel
The Angelo Coast Range Reserve, one of the NRS's most diverse sites, is located on the South Fork of the Eel River. The reserve encompasses four aquatic and at least 26 terrestrial habitat types, including redwood groves, mixed conifer deciduous forests, meadows, several types of chaparral, and the state's largest virgin Douglas-fir forest community. Olympic salamanders, flying squirrels, black bears, and federally threatened northern spotted owls are among the old-growth inhabitants. The reserve also protects...
