Live CMS

CMS live from Facebook. The Pixel Tracker (or Pixel Detector) is the innermost instrument in the very heart of the CMS apparatus, installed around the LHC beampipe. This is the very point where new particles, such as the Higgs boson, are produced by the energy of the proton proton collisions, and so the Pixel detector receives the largest particle-flux of any sub-component of CMS. The new component is made up of two “parts”: a central...

nuSTORM at CERN: Feasibility Study

Kenneth Richard Long
The Neutrinos from Stored Muons, nuSTORM, facility has been designed to deliver a definitive neutrino-nucleus scattering programme using beams of $\bar{\nu}_e$ and $\bar{\nu}_\mu$ from the decay of muons confined within a storage ring. The facility is unique, it will be capable of storing $\mu^\pm$ beams with a central momentum of between 1 GeV/c and 6 GeV/c and a momentum spread of 16%. This specification will allow neutrino-scattering measurements to be made over the kinematic range...

In order to continue pushing the frontiers of high energy physics, a future circular hadron collider, FCC-hh has been proposed. Using 16 T magnets the FCC-hh will be able to collide two beams of hadrons with a centre-of-mass energy of order 100 TeV. In doing so it is hoped that FCC-hh will shed light on some of the mysteries of modern particle physics, in particular the nature of the Higgs potential and the Standard Model...

A Silicon Strip Detector for the Phase II High Luminosity Upgrade of the ATLAS Detector at the Large Hadron Collider

Carlos García Argos
ATLAS is a particle physics experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) that detects proton-proton collisions at a centre of mass energy of 14 TeV. The Semiconductor Tracker is part of the Inner Detector, implemented using silicon microstrip detectors with binary read-out, providing momentum measurement of charged particles with excellent resolution. The operation of the LHC and the ATLAS experiment started in 2010, with ten years of operation expected until major upgrades are needed in...

A Distributed Monitoring and Control System for the Laser Ion Source RILIS at CERN-ISOLDE

Ralf Erik Rossel
In this work, the implementation of the LabVIEW-based RILIS Equipment Acquisition and Control Toolset (REACT) software framework is documented, revised, and further developed to accomplish remotely operated in-source laser spectroscopy experiments at CERN-ISOLDE. The Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) is an integral part of the radioactive ion beam user facility ISOLDE at CERN. Its task as an ion source is to ensure high isobaric purity and production efficiency of the ion beams that are...

Improving the Selectivity of the ISOLDE Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source and In-Source Laser Spectroscopy of Polonium

Daniel Andreas Fink
Exotic atomic nuclei far away from stability are fascinating objects to be studied in many scientic elds such as atomic-, nuclear-, and astrophysics. Since these are often short-lived isotopes, it is necessary to couple their production with immediate extraction and delivery to an experiment. This is the purpose of the on-line isotope separator facility, ISOLDE, at CERN. An essential aspect of this laboratory is the Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) because it provides a...

This animation shows how the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) works.

The film begins with an aerial view of CERN near Geneva, with outlines of the accelerator complex, including the underground Large Hadron Collider (LHC), 27-km in circumference. The positions of the four largest LHC experiments, ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb are revealed before we see protons travelling around the LHC ring.

The proton source is a simple bottle of hydrogen gas. An electric field is...

ARCHIVER Status Update

Joao Fernandes
Recording of joint IT Technical Forum - Computing Seminar 19 Jun 2020

ARCHIVER is a project coordinated by CERN using the EC PCP instrument to procure, assess and validate R&D from cloud based data archiving and preservation services.
The project activities combine multiple ICT technologies, including extreme data-scaling, network connectivity, service interoperability and business models, in a hybrid cloud environment to deliver end-to-end archival and preservation services that cover the full research lifecycle.

Atlas civil engineering

The first things lowered to the cavern were not parts of the new detector or parts for the accelerator rather than the machines digging the cavern bigger and lifts that transport stones and other excess material up to the surface.

This work was very demanding already.

UCAP - A generic, self-service, controls data processing platform (with Java demo)

Lajos Cseppento
The Unified Controls Acquisition and Processing (UCAP) Framework provides, as the name suggests, a means to facilitate and streamline acquisition of Controls data for processing, before making the outputs available via the standard Controls Middleware. In this lecture, we will look into what UCAP proposes to solve "Acquisition -> Transformation -> Publishing" problems, let it be a standard converter, Java or Python user code. The presentation will cover the tools provided by UCAP and integration...
