Frictional slip weakening and shear-enhanced crystallinity in simulated coal fault gouges at subseismic slip rates

Jinfeng Liu & Luuk Bernd Hunfeld
We report seven velocity stepping (VS) and one slide-hold-slide (SHS) friction experiments performed on simulated fault gouges prepared from bituminous coal, collected from the upper Silesian Basin of Poland. These experiments were performed at 25-45 MPa effective normal stress and 100 ℃, employing sliding velocities of 0.1-100 μm/s, using a conventional triaxial apparatus plus direct shear assembly. All samples showed marked slip weakening behaviour at shear displacements beyond ~1-2 mm, from a peak friction coefficient...

Dataset - Complicated Grief following Job Loss - Risk factors for its development and maintenance

J.H.W. Van Eersel
Abstract Increasing evidence shows that job loss can lead to symptoms of complicated grief (CG). However, little is known about which factors relate to the development and maintenance of CG symptoms following job loss. This study aimed to examine risk factors for the development and maintenance of job loss-related CG symptoms. For this study 485 Dutch workers who had lost their job were recruited (239 men and 246 women), with an average age of 50.2...

Frictional healing data from direct shear slide-hold-slide experiments performed on simulated fault gouges from the Groningen gas field

Luuk Bernd Hunfeld
We investigated the frictional strength recovery (healing) and subsequent reactivation and slip-weakening behaviour of simulated fault gouges derived from key stratigraphic units in the seismogenic Groningen gas field (N.E. Netherlands). Direct-shear, Slide-Hold-Slide (SHS) experiments were performed at in-situ conditions of 100 °C, 40 MPa effective normal stress and 10-15 MPa pore fluid pressure (synthetic formation brine). Sheared gouges were allowed to heal for periods up to 100 days before subsequent re-shearing. The initial coefficient of...

Top-view and cross-section photographs from analogue experiments of strain partitioning around a rigid indenter performed in the Tectonic modelling laboratory (TecLab) at Utrecht University

Nemanja Krstekanić & Ernst Willingshofer
This dataset contains original top-view and cross-section photographs of 12 crustal-scale analogue models. Top-view photographs were taken in regular time intervals from the beginning until the end of each experiment (for details see below). Cross-section photographs were taken at the end of each experiment. Therefore, top-view photographs provide means to track and analyse surface deformation through time and space and cross-sections allow to demonstrate overall vertical deformation of each model. The data are grouped in...

Multi-scale electron crystal-orientation diffraction of seismically active carbonate fault rocks

Markus Ohl
We determine the active deformation mechanisms in two active carbonate fault zones in Greece. Detailed slip-system analyses in combination with high-resolution nanostructural investigations show a throughout contribution of crystal plasticity, evident from subgrain-wall misorientations. Post-deformational static recrystallisation and annealing reduces the grain size and offers an alternative mechanism of nanograin formation. The decrease in grain size results in a grain-boundary strengthening effect and slip localisation which can be observed over several orders of length scales....

Data supplement to: Phosphorus fertilization is eradicating the niche of northern Eurasia's threatened plant species

Martin Joseph Wassen
The greater bioavailability of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) in the Anthropocene has strongly impacted terrestrial plant communities. In northwest Europe, high N deposition is considered the main driver of plant diversity loss, so EU legislation to reduce N deposition is expected to promote plant species recovery. But this expectation is simplistic: it ignores the role of other macronutrients. To better understand the potential consequences of changes in the bioavailability of N, P...

Normative Disagreement and Public Good Provision in (Changing) Groups

Kasper Otten
Prior studies suggest that cooperation in public good games with heterogeneous returns (benefits) is unstable and relatively low because participants disagree on the appropriate way to contribute, but the role of these normative views remains unclear because they are rarely directly measured or manipulated. We measure each participant's view on the appropriate way to contribute to the public good prior to play, and use this information to sort people into groups that either agree or...
