Wood bonding by melting of non-toxic fillers using linear friction welding

Christelle Ganne-Chédeville, Gianluca Tondi, Frédéric Pichelin & Antonio Pizzi
Wood to-wood welding was shown to yield high quality joints with challenging perspectives for producing new environmentally-friendly wooden products. The same welding technique was recently applied to solder wood by melting of non-toxic organic fillers to generate coalescence though softening and recrystallization of the material across the interface. Researchers have been undertaken to clarify the effect of the fillers on the final proprieties of the joints. To this purpose, three types of fillers were tested...

Parameters of wood welding: A study with infrared thermography

Christelle Ganne-Chédeville, Milena Properzi, Antonio Pizzi, Jean-Michel Leban & Frédéric Pichelin
Welding of wood is a well-known joining procedure that offers several advantages over traditional mechanical fasteners or gluing. During welding, extensive solid-state transformation phases occur in the so-called melting zone and the heat-affected zone. The nature and the extension of such transformations are correlated to the energy input and thus to the heat generated during the process at the wood joint interface. In the present work the influence of the welding parameters and wood grain...

Viscoelastic behaviour of aged and non-aged spruce wood in the radial direction

Julien Froidevaux, Thomas Volkmer, Christelle Ganne-Chédeville, Joseph Gril & Parviz Navi
The mechanical behaviour of non-aged (modern) and aged spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] wood was investigated in the radial direction using a microtensile testing device. The size of the samples was 5033 mm (radialtangential longitudinal). Elastic, creep, relaxation, rupture and mechanosorption tests were carried out under controlled temperature and relative humidity. Optical and electronic micrographs were produced in order to correlate the mechanical behaviour with the wood structure. Results indicate that the overall mechanical properties...

Wood welding by linear friction: investigations and understanding of the physical and chemical modifications and development of an innovative technology.

Christelle Ganne-Chédeville
Wood welding by linear friction allows bonding of timber in a few seconds without unsing any adhesive. The adhesion is essentially due to the wood fibres entanglements which are embedded in a melted and recured intercellular polymers matrix. But the bonding interphase formation mecanism and the machine parameters and wood substrate influences are not clearly understood. Consenquetly, the goal of this study was to analyse the different factors which are influencing the joint characteristics in...

Arbuscular mycorrhiza effects on Faidherbia albida (Del.) A. Chev. growth under varying soil water and phosphorus levels in Northern Ethiopia

Tree seedling establishment, survival and growth in dryland areas is greatly impacted by water, land use effects and soil nutrient availability. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can have a substantial effect on water and nutrient uptake by seedlings and are affected by nutrient application, water availability and inoculum source. In this study, we examined the effect of AMF inoculation, phosphorus application levels, soil water status, and inoculum source on the growth of Faidherbia albida seedlings. Two...

Kundensegmente im Agrotourismus

Andreas Hochuli, Mario Huber & P. Hofstetter
