Consolidated bioprocessing of lignocellulosic biomass to lactic acid by a synthetic fungal-bacterial consortium

Robert Shahab, Jeremy S. Luterbacher, Simone Brethauer Studer & Michael Hans-Peter Studer
Consolidated bioprocessing (CBP) of lignocellulosic feedstocks to platform chemicals requires complex metabolic processes, which are commonly executed by single genetically engineered microorganisms. Alternatively, synthetic consortia can be employed to compartmentalize the required metabolic functions among different specialized microorganisms as demonstrated in this work for the direct production of lactic acid from lignocellulosic biomass. We composed an artificial cross‐kingdom consortium and co‐cultivated the aerobic fungus Trichoderma reesei for the secretion of cellulolytic enzymes with facultative anaerobic...

Mechanically-induced wood welding

Milena Properzi, Jean-Michel Leban, Michela Zanetti & Frédéric Pichelin
Mechanically-induced vibration welding of flat wood surfaces and rotation welding of wood dowels, without any adhesives, gave strength values comparable to those obtained with adhesive bonded joints. The joints obtained have strength up to structural level but can only be used for interior joinery and furniture. The reasons of the welding effect are presented and explained both at the wood anatomical and molecular level

Nurses' accuracy and self-perceived ability using the Emergency Severity Index triage tool: a cross-sectional study in four Swiss hospitals

Karin Jordi, Florian Grossmann, Gary M. Gaddis, Eva Cignacco Müller, Kris Denhaerynck, René Schwendimann & Christian Nickel
Background The Emergency Severity Index (ESI) is an English language emergency department patient triage tool. After translation, it has been adapted for use to triage patients in growing numbers of emergency departments in non-English-speaking countries. Few reports of the proficiency of triage nurses to score an ESI exist. We sought to determine accuracy, inter-rater reliability, and subjective confidence of triage nurses at four hospitals to determine an ESI from standardized ESI scenarios. Methods Triage nurses...

Timber bridges: load carrying behaviour according to climate changes

Steffen Franke, Bettina Franke, Marcus Jacob Schiere & Andreas Müller
Timber road bridges have been built worldwide since centuries. The high performance of wood as structural material is approved. However the influence of moisture induced stresses in cross sections according to the varied ambient climate are still questioned. Results observed in the long term monitoring of six timber bridges provide first guidelines for practitioners. Further on, first numerical simulations are carried out for the assessment of the long term behaviour of timber bridges over the...

Tina H. Pedersen, Eva Cignacco, Jonas Meuli, Ferdinand Habermann, Joana Berger-Estilita & Robert Greif
Objectives: The implementation of obstetric hybrid simulation and interprofessional collaboration between midwives and anesthetists in labor emergencies fostered the need to evaluate the impact of such a program. The original Interprofessional Attitude Scale (IPAS) assesses interprofessional attitudes among health professional students and includes the 2011 and 2016 Interprofessional Collaborative Practice report competency domains. The purpose of this study was to create a German version of the IPAS (G-IPAS) to use for the education of healthcare...

Arbeitsbelastung von Pflegehelfenden in Schweizer Alters- und Pflegeheimen : Nichtlineare kanonische Korrelationsanalyse

A. Ziegler, Madeleine Bernet, Petra Metzenthin, A. Conca & Sabine Hahn

Is in-toing gait physiological in children? : Results of a large cohort study in 5910 healthy (pre-) school children

Ronald Verch, Anja Hirschmüller, Juliane Müller, Heiner Baur, Frank Mayer & Steffen Müller
Background In-toeing is a major concern of many parents presenting their children to pediatric orthopedists. Foot progression angle (FPA) quantifies the rotation of the foot’s longitudinal axis during gait, with negative values describing in-toeing and positive values describing out-toeing. Although it has been shown that the FPA changes over the course of a child’s development, reference values for the normal FPA-range are lacking. Research question This study aimed to establish reference values in 1–14 year...

Strengthening of timber structures using pre-stressed carbon fibre lamellas

Milena Properzi & Frédéric Pichelin
The refurbishment of old buildings often comes hand in hand with an increase of the dead- and live load. This and the higher safety factors often make a reinforcement of the old beams necessary. The use of steel is often not regarded as an adequate solution in a timber construction. This because of the increase of the structures self weight, the appearance and the corrosion in marine environments. The use of CFRP allows methods, which...

Communication Aids for Medical Personnel and Foreign-Language Patients and Their Relations in Paediatric Care.

Murielle Drack, Beatrice Kaufmann & Arne Scheuermann
Clear, comprehensible communication between medical experts and patients in their care is essential. Misunderstandings can cause a sense of insecurity and even incorrect action on the part of the patient. Therefore, foreign-language patients are a special challenge to nursing staff. This situation will become increasingly problematic as immigration rates rise. The aim of the initial project was to define guidelines for the type of communication aids needed by nursing staff in paediatrics. Such guidelines had...

Reliability and validity of a smartphone-based application for the quantification of the sit-to-stand movement in healthy seniors

Adrien Cerrito, Lukas Bichsel, Lorenz Radlinger & Stefan Schmid
Introduction Recently, it has been demonstrated that biomechanical parameters measured with accelerometers during everyday activities might provide early information about mobility in seniors. The use of smartphones has been suggested for this purpose. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a smartphone-based application for the quantification of the sit-to-stand movement (STS) in healthy seniors. Methods Sixteen healthy seniors performed the STS with a smartphone first attached to the lower back and then...

Neben...

The Impact of Environmentally Friendly Innovations on Value Added

Christian Soltmann, Tobias Stucki & Martin Woerter
While recent literature has focused on explaining the determinants of green innovations, it is not well understood how such innovations affect performance. To analyse the relationship between green innovation and performance, new industry-level panel data were exploited: these include 12 OECD countries, the whole manufacturing sector and a period of 30 years. The results show that green inventions are U-shape related to performance. However, the turning point is quite high and hence only relevant for...

Reliability and validity of trunk accelerometry-derived performance measurements in a standardized heel-rise test in elderly subjects

Stefan Schmid, Roger Hilfiker & Lorenz Radlinger
This cross-sectional study evaluated the intrasession reliability and concurrent validity of trunk accelerometry (with force plate measurements) for vertical ground reaction force and external mechanical power recorded during a standardized heel-rise (HR) test in 54 elderly subjects (mean +/- standard deviation age 81.2 +/- 6.4 yr). Peak force as well as peak and average power revealed intraclass correlation coefficients of >0.75 and low standard errors of measurement for both the force plate- and the accelerometer-based...
