Perinatal behavior of a wild Grevy's zebra (Equus grevyi) mare and foal
Blair Costelloe
This paper describes the postpartum behavior
of a wild Grevy’s zebra (Equus grevyi) mare and
foal. The foal first attempted to stand within 5
min of birth and succeeded at approximately
10 min after birth. Within 40 min of birth,
the infant could walk steadily. The foal did not
suckle during the observation time. An ethogram
of observed behaviors is provided.

Maternal tactics for mitigating neonate predation risk during the postpartum period in Thomson's gazelle
Blair Costelloe & Daniel I. Rubenstein
The time immediately following birth is a period of high predation risk for ungulate neonates. Ungulate mothers exhibit perinatal behaviors that appear to mitigate offspring risk during this time. However, few studies of infant mortality include the postpartum period. Therefore, the function and effectiveness of these maternal behaviors are untested. We observed perinatal behavior in 11 Thomson’s gazelle (Eudorcas thomsonii) mother-infant pairs in a free-ranging population under predaiton pressure. Five of the six fawns that...

Scientists are from Mars, Laypeople are from Venus: An Evidence-Based Rationale for Communicating the Consensus on Climate
John Cook & Peter Jacobs
The insights available from social science research are key to understanding people’s attitudes
to climate change, and to developing communication outreach strategies that are
effective in fostering meaningful societal action (Hackman and others 2014; Lorenzoni
and Whitmarsh 2014). Social psychology explores the ways in which group dynamics and
cultural values influence attitudes towards climate change. Cognitive psychology explores
how people update their beliefs in response to information, using randomized experiments
to explore how different groups respond to different messages. A large...

The integration between high-resolution multi beam bathymetry, side scan sonar data, high resolution chirp sonar provide a frame functional to the identification and mapping of a variety of deep-sea benthic habitats including healthy Lophelia, Madrepora, Dendrophyllia and Desmophyllum often associated with sponges and polychaetes.

3-D histology reconstructions supporting the study Three-dimensional histology volume reconstruction of axonal tract tracing data: exploring topographical organization in subcortical projections from rat barrel cortex (Zakiewicz et al., 2015, PLoS One). We share volumetric reconstructions of histological images from 4 tract-tracing experiments derived from the Rodent Brain Workbench (www.rbwb.org), see Whole Brain Connectivity Atlas; 2-D image repository. The original experimental material is described in Zakiewicz et al. (2011, PLoS One, 6(8):e22669), while technical details are...

01030 Kyiv Ukraine The Palaearctic genus Noeeta belongs to the tribe Noeetini Norrbom & Korneyev 1999; larvae of all members of the tribe, as far as known, feed in the flower heads of either Lactuca or HIeracium spp. and are widespread in the Holarctics. Noeeta includes 7 nominal species occurring in the Palaearctic Region. Validity of some of them is doubtful. The most...
