Optimal spatial bandwidth capacity in multiplexed off-axis holography for rapid quantitative phase reconstruction and visualization

Gili Dardikman, Nir Turko, Noa Nativ, Simcha Mirsky & Natan Shaked
We present new methods for optimizing the spatial bandwidth capacity in off-axis holography using spatial multiplexing. We use optimal spatial multiplexing of off-axis holograms to fill the entire spatial frequency domain, including the space previously occupied by the intensity of the sample. Our approach enables spatial digital compression of eight off-axis holograms into a single real-valued multiplexed hologram, having the same amount of pixels as each of the input holograms, but still allowing their full...

Hitoshi Hiura, Hiromitsu Hattori, Norio Kobayashi, Hiroaki Okae, , Naoko Miyauchi, Akane Kitamura, Hiroyuki Kikuchi, Hiroaki Yoshida & Takahiro Arima
Abstract Background Frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET) is increasingly available for the improvement of the success rate of assisted reproductive technologies other than fresh embryo transfer (ET). There have been numerous findings that FET provides better obstetric and perinatal outcomes. However, the birth weight of infants conceived using FET is heavier than that of those conceived via ET. In addition, some reports have suggested that FET is associated with perinatal diseases such as placenta accreta and...

Effects of defocus and other quadratic errors on OTF

Kevin Liang & Miguel Alonso
Even for the simplest nontrivial aberration, defocus, and for a circular pupil, there is no theoretical closed-form expression for the optical transfer function (OTF). By using a simple approximation for the error at the pupil, we provide a simple yet accurate approximation for the OTF of a defocused system. We then generalize this approach to generic quadratic aberrations, including astigmatism.

Kilohertz binary phase modulator for pulsed laser sources using a digital micromirror device

Maximilian Hoffmann, Ioannis Papadopoulos & Benjamin Judkewitz
The controlled modulation of an optical wavefront is required for aberration correction, digital phase conjugation or patterned photostimulation. For most of these applications it is desirable to control the wavefront modulation at the highest rates possible. The digital micromirror device (DMD) presents a cost-effective solution to achieve high-speed modulation and often exceeds the speed of the more conventional liquid crystal spatial light modulator, but is inherently an amplitude modulator. Furthermore, spatial dispersion caused by DMD...

Procedural sedation and analgesia practices by emergency physicians in the Netherlands: a nationwide survey

Maybritt Kuypers, Gaël Smits, Suzanne Valkenet, Wendy Thijssen & Frans Plötz
Abstract Background Several efforts have been made to assure and to improve the quality of procedural sedation and analgesia (PSA) performed by emergency physicians (EPs) in The Netherlands. This study investigated the current PSA practice and competences of EPs in both adult and paediatric patients. In particular, if residency and current training, awareness of guidelines is sufficient for registered EPs to adequately perform PSA and if the availability of both adult and paediatric PSA in...

Abstract Background To report fluorescein angiography findings in a group of albuminuric Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) patients without diabetic retinopathy. Methods Fifteen albuminuric T1DM patients with normal/near normal estimated glomerular filtration rate without diabetic retinopathy underwent fluorescein angiography; presence of microaneurysms, vascular permeability changes and retinal malperfusion were evaluated. Results Fluorescein angiography revealed microaneurysms, blood-retinal barrier breakdown and retinal ischemia in 10 (67%) and 11 (73%); 8 (53%) and 9 (60%); 2 (13%) and...

Abstract Background HCV treatment uptake has drastically increased in HIV-HCV coinfected patients in France since direct-acting antiviral (DAA) treatment approval, resulting in HCV cure in 63% of all HIV-HCV patients by the end of 2015. We investigated the impact of scaling-up DAA on HCV prevalence in the whole HIV population and in various risk groups over the next 10 years in France using a transmission dynamic compartmental model. Methods The model was based on epidemiological...

Figure S3. Heatmap of perennial ryegrass LG3 over six full-sib families. A Kruskal-Wallis test was performed on each marker to identify significant regions for heading. Using the perennial ryegrass genome zipper [26, 30] we identified a putative gene order for markers on LG3. These data were used to construct the heatmap for each family. A perennial ryegrass transcriptome-based genetic linkage map upon which GenomeZipper was based was used as reference to construct LG3 [26, 27]...

Use of a baseline risk score to identify the risk of serious infectious events in patients with rheumatoid arthritis during certolizumab pegol treatment

Jeffrey Curtis, Kevin Winthrop, Cathy O’Brien, , Marc De Longueville &
Abstract Background The risk of serious infectious events (SIEs) is increased in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The aim of this study was to develop an age-adjusted comorbidity index (AACI) to predict, using baseline characteristics, the SIE risk in patients with RA treated with certolizumab pegol (CZP). Methods Data of CZP-treated patients with RA were pooled from the RAPID1/RAPID2 randomized controlled trials (RCT CZP) and their open-label extensions (All CZP). Predictors of the first SIE...

Supplementary material from \"A ‘reader’ unit of the chemical computer\"

Pavel S. Smelov & Vladimir K. Vanag
We suggest the main principals and functional units of the parallel chemical computer, namely, (i) a generator (which is a network of coupled oscillators) of oscillatory dynamic modes, (ii) a unit which is able to recognize these modes (a ‘reader’) and (iii) a decision-making unit, which analyses the current mode, compares it with the external signal and sends a command to the mode generator to switch it to the other dynamical regime. Three main methods...
