Scientists discover groundbreaking facts about human gut mesentery

Ashutosh Kumar
In a breakthrough study, a group of doctors and basic scientists from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Research, (JIPMER) Puducherry have laid the long held debate to rest by validating, in human cadavers, that mesentery is a single entity. This debate is continuing since hundreds of years but now (using a revised method of dissection developed by these scientists) they have produced hard evidence of...

Air quality and source apportionment modeling of year 2017 ozone episodes in Albuquerque/Bernalillo County, New Mexico

Kenneth Craig, Garnet Erdakos, Shih Ying Chang & Lynn Baringer
Albuquerque/Bernalillo County, New Mexico, is currently in attainment of the 2015 National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for ozone (70 ppb), but its ozone design values have increased in recent years. Air quality and source apportionment modeling with the Comprehensive Air Quality Model with Extensions (CAMx) was conducted for Albuquerque/Bernalillo County to develop a refined understanding of ozone source apportionment in the region, estimate ozone concentrations in the year 2025 based on projected changes in...

Multipollutant impacts to U.S. receptors of regional on-road freight in Ontario, Canada

, Rebecca K. Saari, Chris Bachmann & Wilson Wang
On-road freight is a significant source of air pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions. The resulting economic damages can cross borders through processes of atmospheric fate and transport, regardless of whether that freight serves local or regional demand. Understanding patterns of freight demand and atmospheric processes can thus inform inter-jurisdictional efforts to mitigate multipollutant damages. We quantify how different freight trips across 49 census divisions in the Province of Ontario, Canada create an economic burden on...

The Comprehensive Fire Information Reconciled Emissions (CFIRE) inventory: Wildland fire emissions developed for the 2011 and 2014 U.S. National Emissions Inventory

, Sean M. Raffuse, , Nathan Pavlovic, Peter Lahm & Venkatesh Rao
Wildland fire emissions from both wildfires and prescribed fires represent a major component of overall U.S. emissions. Obtaining an accurate, time-resolved inventory of these emissions is important for many purposes, including to account for emissions of greenhouse gases and short-lived climate forcers, as well as to model air quality for health, regulatory, and planning purposes. For the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2011 and 2014 National Emissions Inventories, a new methodology was developed to reconcile the...

Synthesis, characterisation and quantum chemical studies of a new series of iron chelatable fluorescent sensors

, Robert C. Hider &
A series of iron chelatable fluorescent probes based on 3-hydroxypyridin-4-ones or 3-hydroxypyran-4-ones have been designed and synthesised. The fluorescence of the probes are sensitive to the presence of Fe3+ with a metal-to-ligand ratio of 1:3. Fluorescence quenching of hydroxypyranone-based probes was found to be inferior to that of hydroxypyridones. Based on density functional theory calculations at the B3YP/6–31G+(d,p) level of theory, geometry optimisations of ligands and ligand-Fe3+ complex were obtained. Quantum mechanical calculations were also...

Componentized hierarchical build and test infrastructure and processes for CASL VERA

Roscoe Bartlett
Developing, testing, and deploying complex computational science and engineering (CSE) software created by distributed teams is a daunting endeavor. This was well demonstrated in the Consortium of the Advanced Simulation of Light-water reactors (CASL) project. The CASL Virtual Environment for Reactor Applications (VERA) software integrates the development efforts of many different teams, code bases, and institutions into multi-physics executables. The software engineering and process challenges to achieve an integrated product that is continuously upgraded with...

Cintia Almeida Da Silva Santos & Fernanda Rodrigues Pontes

The first COVID-19 pandemic lockdown in Aotearoa New Zealand resulted in disruptions to everyday life, including changes in grocery shopping, cooking and eating. This study aimed to capture changes in behaviours and perceptions of grocery shopping and food preparation during the lockdown, and the extent to which dietary patterns changed during this period. Data were collected in an online survey of 3028 adults (89% women, mean age = 44 years, range 18–87 years, the median...
