French at Early Level: A Pilot Study

This article describes the planning and implementation of a pilot study of teaching French to Early Level Learners. It discusses suitable pedagogy and resources for teaching a language at this level. In particular it demonstrates the importance of contextualising language learning and involving young learners in multi-sensorial activities. The benefits of creating a theme around stories and songs to learn a language are also discussed. This article shares practitioner’s opinions about their involvement in delivering...

Two interesting species of Rickia (Laboulbeniales) from coastal habitats in Belgium and the Netherlands

André De Kesel, Danny Haelewaters & Cyrille Gerstmans
This paper presents new records of Rickia (Laboulbeniales) from hosts collected in organic litter along the high-water mark of the North Sea beach. Samples were taken in Belgium and the Netherlands. Rickia proteini was found on Proteinus sp. (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae); it is a quite uncommon species and a first record for Belgium. Rickia laboulbenioides is a newly described species, found on the millipede Cylindroiulus latestriatus (Diplopoda, Julida, Blaniulidae). Descriptions and illustrations are given for both...

A Portrait of Diversity In Indonesian Traditional Cuisine

The archipelagic geography and demography of Indonesian people due to the way people serve food and drinks on the table is analyzed. Statistically some properties about the food recipes are observed, while the analysis is followed by the methodology to see the clustering of the food and beverage due to their ingredients. The global mapping of all the food yields four classes of the food that is related to the way people conventionally prepare the...

Value-Based Working Capital Management. Determining Liquid Asset Levels in Entrepreneurial Environments

Grzegorz Michalski
Value-Based Working Capital Management analyzes the causes and effects of improper cash flow management between entrepreneurial organizations with varying levels of risk. This work looks at the motives and criteria for decision-making by entrepreneurs in their efforts to protect the financial security of their businesses and manage financial liquidity. Michalski argues that businesses exposed to greater risk need a different approach to managing liquidity levels.

DMAOnline - Phase two report

Masud Khokhar, Hardy Schwamm & John Krug
This report is divided into three sections, each of which provide a valuable insight into the work we have undertaken as part of the Jisc funded DMAOnline project. Part I of the report focuses on the rationale behind DMAOnline and highlights the use cases we have worked on in the first and the second phases of the project. Part I of report is kept short and we encourage you to review phase one report (http://dx.doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.1482039)...

Ontology Editing and Creating Semantic Applications

Rebecca Younes, Jon Corson-Rikert, Jim Blake & Cornell University
As an integrated ontology editor and semantic web application, Vitro provides the flexible, ontology-neutral technology at the core of VIVO. This workshop will introduce Vitro as an independent application through a combination of demonstrations and hands‐on exercises. Workshop participants will gain an appreciation of Vitro’s power and flexibility as a tool for ontology and data management, data browsing, and searching. They will acquire practical skills in installing, configuring, and using the software to create a...

A critical geopolitics of observant practice at British military airshows

Matthew Rech
This paper demonstrates how visual cultures of militarism take shape as part of a ‘thick’ geopolitics of being-in-place. It draws on historical accounts of, and empirical observations at, British military airshows, which it interprets via the concept of ‘observant practice’. The paper argues that the imaginative and rhetorical force of military spectacle and popular militarism are tied to its markedly enclavic spatiality i.e. to seeing and doing in-place. By taking seriously the spatial and sensory...

Using openWordnet-PT to improve VIVO

Alexandre Rademaker, Daniela Brauner, Glauco Roberto Munsberg & André Guimarães Peil
VIVO is an open source semantic web application for research
discovery. The power of VIVO relies mainly on the VIVO-ISF ontology and its expressivity to represent all information about researchers and the research domain. VIVO-ISF makes all those types of information interconnected and browsable in the VIVO application. Nevertheless, although VIVO has good support for faceted search across disciplines, it is still not anything more than a keyword-based search engine. That is; it is still...

Enhancement in performance of solid oxide fuel cells with functional interlayer

Mohammed Hussain Abdul Jabbar
The electrode performance of solid oxide fuel cell anode with Pd nanoparticles at the interface of ScYSZ electrolyte and Sr0.94Ti0.9Nb0.1O3 (STN) electrode introduced in the form of metal functional layer have been investigated at temperatures below 600 °C. A metal functional layer consisting of Pd was deposited by magnetron sputtering. Effecting from heat treatments, Pd nanoparticles with particle sizes in the range of 5–20 nm were distributed at the interface, and throughout the backbone. The...

Hybrid organic-inorganic polymer solar cells

Mohammed Hussain Abdul Jabbar
We report the effect of metal-oxide nanocomposites on the performance of bulk heterojunction polymer solar cells. A photoactive layer composed of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) was blended with a newly developed ZrTiO4/Bi2O3(BITZ) metal-oxide nanocomposite. We observed a short-circuit current density of 9.90 mA/cm2, an open-circuit voltage of 0.64 V, and a fill factor of 0.60. The overall power conversion efficiency increased from 3.20 to 3.72% with an external quantum efficiency improvement...
