Energy-SHIFTS scoping workshop – ‘Evidence in the energy policy process’, Brussels (Belgium); 18 June 2019

Energy-SHIFTS consortium
In the Spring and Summer of 2019, Energy-SHIFTS undertook four scoping workshops based around the multi-stakeholder exploration of four ‘SSH Priority Themes’. Each workshop involved 20-30 participants, plus 2 Early-Stage Researchers, and resulted in tangible recommendations for the organisation of, and maximising the impact of, the rest of Energy-SHIFTS’ project activities.

The core purpose of these workshops was to open up discussion around some of the big energy-SSH issues being funded by the European Commission. We...

Energy-SHIFTS Working Group 1 - Renewables

Energy-SHIFTS consortium
The Energy-SHIFTS Working Groups provided SSH research priority recommendations for four specific (SET-Plan focussed) energy topics. Members were leading energy-SSH researchers, representing wider disciplinary research communities e.g. via leadership of research groups/institutes, Horizon 2020 energy projects, and/or editorial roles for journals.

The Working Groups produced a number of streams of data, including 10 interviews each, and surveys of hundreds of SSH scholars across Europe. Interview and survey protocols were also published by the project (see reference).

Energy-SHIFTS: Energy Social Sciences & Humanities Innovation Forum Targeting the SET-Plan

Energy-SHIFTS consortium
Energy-SHIFTS – “Energy Social sciences & Humanities Innovation Forum Targeting the SET-Plan” – responded to the latest phase of the EC’s support for energy-related Social Sciences and Humanities (energy-SSH) research at the EU policy level. As is now widely recognised, rapid technological uptake is not the only factor in moving towards low-carbon energy systems. Critical social issues must be centrally considered from the earliest stages, including: democratic inclusion, burden-sharing, participation beyond niche groups, transformative governance,...

Complex Systems modelling to plan a Sustainable Future

Ilaria Perissi
In this short video (10 minutes), Dr Ilaria Perissi tries to respond to the following questions:
What is modelling? How do climate scientists do it? Why should we listen to models? Can models predict the future?
Models can help work out what has caused observed climate warming in the past and how big a role natural factors play compared to human factors. Scientists run many different experiments to model climates of the past,...
