Functional chalcone-substituted tetrakis-metallophthalocyanines: Synthesis and spectroscopic characterization

Volkan Çakır
In this study, a new phthalonitrile derivative, (E)-4-(3-(3-(3-methoxyphenyl)acryloyl)phenoxy)phthalonitrile, and four peripherally (E)-4-(3-(3-(3-methoxyphenyl)acryloyl)phenoxy) tetrasubstituted new Ni(II), Zn(II), Co(II), and Cu(II) phthalocyanine derivatives are synthesized and characterized. (E)-4-(3-(3-(3-Methoxyphenyl)acryloyl)phenoxy)phthalonitrile is synthesized by heating (E)-1-(3-hydroxyphenyl)-3-(3-methoxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-one and 4-nitrophthalonitrile in the presence of K2CO3 in dry DMF at 60°C for 96 h. The metallophthalocyanines are prepared by cyclotetramerization of (E)-4-(3-(3-(3-methoxyphenyl)acryloyl)phenoxy)phthalonitrile with NiCl2, Zn(CH3COO)2, CoCl2, and CuCl2 in n-pentanol in the presence of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene. Characterization of the new compounds is performed by...

Tuning the optoelectronic properties of oligothiophenes for solar cell applications by varying the number of cyano and fluoro substituents for solar cell applications: A theoretical study

Francisco C. Franco
Chemical modifications through substitution are observed to be effective in controlling the optoelectronic properties of various polymers for different applications. In this study, density functional theory–based calculations are employed to investigate the optoelectronic properties of several oligothiophenes based on poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) by varying the number of fluoro and cyano substituents attached. The resulting structures of the polymer derivatives are affected by the electrostatic interactions between the cyano or fluoro groups and the adjacent thiophene unit. Of...

2-(4-Boronophenyl)quinoline-4-carboxylic acid derivatives: Design and synthesis, aggregation-induced emission characteristics, and binding activity studies for D-ribose with long-wavelength emission

, Hao Wang, , , Min Guo, &
Long-wavelength fluorescent sensors with large Stokes shifts show useful applications in chemical biology and clinical laboratory diagnosis. We have recently reported [4-(4-{[3-(4-boronobenzamido)propyl]carbamoyl}quinolin-2-yl)phenyl]boronic acid that can selectively recognize d-ribose in a buffer solution of pH 7.4. However, the short emission wavelength (395 nm) and aggregation-caused quenching effect are not conducive to applications as a sensor. Novel diboronic acid compounds are synthesized using 2-(4-boronophenyl)quinoline-4-carboxylic acid as the building block and p-phenylenediamine as the linker. These compounds show...

Patterns of Religiosity, Death Anxiety, and Hope in a Population of Community-Dwelling Palliative Care Patients in New Zealand—What Gives Hope If Religion Can’t?

Catherine M. Byrne & Deidre D. Morgan
This study examines the prevalence of religiosity, death anxiety, and hope in a sample of New Zealand community hospice patients in the last 6 months of life. It explores the factors triggering distress or hope and examines whether religiosity is protective against death anxiety for this population. Early studies showed religious faith helps relieve death anxiety, but later work suggests this may only be the case in societies which are generally religious. Very little research...

Attentional Bias Dynamics and Posttraumatic Stress in Survivors of Violent Conflict and Atrocities: New Directions in Clinical Psychological Science of Refugee Mental Health

Kim Yuval, Ariel Zvielli & Amit Bernstein
Survivors of violent conflict and atrocities, forcibly displaced persons (FDPs) are at risk for trauma-related mental health problems. Experimental clinical research key to the development of interventions tailored to FDPs is limited. We examined relations among attentional bias (AB) to trauma cues, posttraumatic stress symptom (PTS) severity, and behavioral avoidance of exposure to trauma-related stimuli. A total of 110 Sudanese male asylum seekers (age M = 32.7, SD = 6.5) were recruited from the community...

Why Women Are Blamed for Being Sexually Harassed: The Effects of Empathy for Female Victims and Male Perpetrators

Renata Bongiorno, Chloe Langbroek, Paul G. Bain, Michelle Ting & Michelle K. Ryan
The #MeToo movement has highlighted the widespread problem of men’s sexual harassment of women. Women are typically reluctant to make a sexual-harassment complaint and often encounter victim-blaming attitudes when they do, especially from men. Informed by the social identity perspective, two experiments examined the influence of empathy—both for women who are sexually harassed and for male harassers—on men’s and women’s propensity to blame victims. In Study 1, university students (N = 97) responded to a...

Appropriateness of Medications in Older Adults Living With Frailty: Impact of a Pharmacist-Led Structured Medication Review Process in Primary Care

, Marjan Abbasi, Julia Dabravolskaj, Cheryl A. Sadowski, Hannah Yua & Bernadette Chevalier
Background: Older persons with frailty take multiple medications and are vulnerable to inappropriate prescribing. Objective: This study assesses the impact of a team-based, pharmacist-led structured medication review process in primary care on the appropriateness of medications taken by older adults living with frailty. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design in 6 primary care practices within an academic clinic in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. We enrolled community dwelling older adults 65 years and older with frailty...
