Platelet-Rich Fibrin–Augmented Gap-Bridging Strategy in Rabbit Anterior Cruciate Ligament Repair

Pei-Wei Weng, Chih-Hwa Chen, Yi-Cheng Lin, Kuan-Hao Chen, Yi-Yen Yeh, Jen-Ming Lai, Chang-Jung Chiang & Chin-Chean Wong
Background:We assessed the efficacy of a novel platelet-rich fibrin (PRF)–augmented repair strategy for promoting biological healing of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) midsubstance tear in a rabbit model. The biological gap-bridging effect of a PRF scaffold alone or in combination with rabbit ligamentocytes on primary ACL healing was evaluated both in vitro and in vivo.Hypothesis:A PRF matrix can be implanted as a provisional fibrin-platelet bridging scaffold at an ACL defect to facilitate functional healing.Study Design:Controlled...

Functional magnetic resonance imaging in migraine: A systematic review

Severin Schramm, Corinna Börner, Miriam Reichert, Thomas Baum, Claus Zimmer, Florian Heinen, Michaela V Bonfert & Nico Sollmann
BackgroundMigraine is a highly prevalent primary headache disorder. Despite a high burden of disease, key disease mechanisms are not entirely understood. Functional magnetic resonance imaging is an imaging method using the blood-oxygen-level-dependent signal, which has been increasingly used in migraine research over recent years. This systematic review summarizes recent findings employing functional magnetic resonance imaging for the investigation of migraine.MethodsWe conducted a systematic search and selection of functional magnetic resonance imaging applications in migraine from...

Introduction: Obesity is associated with a worse prognosis in COVID-19 patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Veno-venous (V-V) Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) can be a rescue option, however, the direct impact of morbid obesity in this select group of patients remains unclear. Methods: This is an observational study of critically ill adults with COVID-19 and ARDS supported by V-V ECMO. Data are from 82 institutions participating in the COVID-19 Critical Care Consortium international registry. Patients...

Severe Ciliopathy-Like Phenotype in an Infant With a Novel MPDU1 Missense Variant

Sihem Darouich, Houda Bellamine & Ichrak Khamassi
Congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG) are associated with ciliary dysfunction due to altered glycosylation of ciliary glycoproteins. We describe a severe ciliopathy-like phenotype in a female infant associated with a novel homozygous missense variant NM_004870.4(MPDU1):c.503G>A/p.Gly168Glu. Our findings, based on the co-segregation of the variant with the phenotype and in-silico analysis, implicate this MPDU1 missense variant in this disorder. Matched phenotype includes symmetric growth restriction, facial dysmorphism, ichthyosis, hepatomegaly with severe duct plate malformation, renal cortical...
