Kruger National Park cactus counts archive

John Hoffmann
This dataset contains an evaluation, over 21 years, of biological control of an invasive cactus, Opuntia stricta, in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. Annually, from 1992 - 2013, the numbers of O. stricta plants, cladodes and fruits were recorded, along permanent transects, at four sites with different invasion-histories and with high- and low-densities of the cactus. The abundance of two biological control agent species was also monitored: (i) the cochineal insect, Dactylopius opuntiae, and...

Energy Transition in South Africa using a linked energy-economic model

Bruno Merven, Faaiqa Hartley, Jesse Burton & Jules Schers
In this paper an improved energy-economic model is used to analyse the transition away from coal and toward renewable energy in South Africa. The model enhancements presented in this paper allow for a more accurate assessment of changing coal costs on potential energy and emissions pathways for South Africa. The better representation of the coal sector provides insights on the timing and magnitude of coal mine and power plant retirements, which are a crucial part...

Factors shaping lecturers' adoption of OER at three South African universities

Glenda Cox & Henry Trotter
The research presented here focuses on understanding the obstacles, opportunities and practices associated with Open Educational Resources (OER) adoption at three South African universities. It addresses the question: Why do South African lecturers adopt – or not adopt – OER? In trying to answer this, the authors also attempt to identify which factors shape lecturers’ OER adoption decisions, and how lecturers’ institutional cultures influence their OER use and creation choices.
This study employed a qualitative...

The Research on Open Educational Resources for Development (ROER4D) project was a four-year (2013–2017), large-scale networked project which set out to contribute a Global South research perspective on how open educational resources can help to improve access, enhance quality and reduce the cost of education in the Global South. The project engaged a total of 103 researchers in 18 sub-projects across 21 countries from South America, Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, coordinated by Network Hub teams...

Open Geospatial Data

Thomas Slingsby & Nicholas Lindenberg
This presentation explores the value of open GeoSpatial data. It considers the direct and indirect costs of opening access to GeoSpatial data and describes how dead portals serve as barriers to access. The presentation highlights that spatial and technical literacy are required to use geospatial data. Data poverty skews analyses toward places that have data, which may disadvantage areas unable to provide equivalent detail in useful formats for researchers.
