Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is a fat tissue present in most mammals, which is specialized in non-shivering thermogenesis. Thermogenic activity in BAT is commonly detected by PET/CT imaging with 18F-FDG, a glucose analog, in both rodents and humans. Increased uptake of the 18F-FDG within regions of BAT is interpreted as an indicator of increased thermogenic activity within the tissue. Despite its prevalence, recent studies have begun to question the use of 18F-FDG PET/CT for the...

Data for Open Access Patterns in Emerging Scholars’ Journal Choice: A Bibliometric Analysis

This bibliometric analysis of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill research provides a case study for tenure-track faculty’s open access publishing action. Looking specifically at the publications of 300 tenure-track assistant professors and instructors, this study creates a series of quantitative information visualizations to see researcher publishing trends leading up to tenure review. It identifies the proportion of assistant professors publishing open access, breaks down the top departments, and shows how open access has...

Session Laws Passed by the North Carolina General Assembly During 1866/67-1967 (plain text format) version 1

Matt Jansen, Neil Byers, Amanda Henley, Rucha Dalwadi & Lorin Bruckner
This corpus was created for a text analysis project called On the Books: Jim Crow and Algorithms of Resistance. On the Books focused specifically on the laws passed during the Jim Crow Era, which is defined for this project as the period between Reconstruction and the Civil Rights Movement (1866-1967). This dataset contains 96 text files, one for each volume in the corpus, in a plain text format. This work is licensed under a Creative...

Langa 18-39y Diet Survey: Taxed and Untaxed Beverages Replication Dataset

Michael Essman

Walker et al, Lab Animal publication - survey data

This national survey aimed to identify how biomedical researchers using vertebrate animals viewed issues of significance for translational science including oversight and public engagement and to analyze how researcher characteristics and animal model choice correlate with those views. Responses from 1,187 researchers showed awareness of, and concerns about, problems of translation, reproducibility, and rigor. Surveyed scientists were nevertheless optimistic about the value of animal studies, favorable about research oversight, and reported openness with nonscientists in...

IMGV for Long COVID

Pilot data supports virtual Integrative Medical Group Visits for people with Long COVID Abstract Background Long COVID is a common, debilitating post-infectious illness following mild to severe COVID infections. Effective management of Long COVID is currently unknown. Shared Medical Appointments or Integrative Medical Group Visits (IMGV) are effective interventions for chronic conditions. Virtual IMGVs may improve management of Long COVID. Objective This single arm non-randomized study assessed the feasibility of patient-reported outcome measures to study...

Km and Ki Dataset for Selection of HIV-1 for Resistance to Fifth Generation Protease Inhibitors Reveals Two Independent Pathways to High-Level Resistance

&
Ki values were determined against all UMASS inhibitors (Table 1). Brackets above the bars represent significant p-values between the two groups using the unpaired t-test. Data were pooled in different ways for the following analyses: A) The Ki values against the inhibitors with the larger R1-2 moiety (n=34) were more potent against resistant proteases compared to the inhibitors with the smaller R1-1 moiety (n=35) B) Ki values for the inhibitors with the R2-2 group (n=10)...

An Algorithm to Predict Death Using Insurance Claims Data

, , , , , , , &
The inability to identify dates of death in insurance claims data is a major limitation to retrospective claims-based research. Deaths likely result in disenrollment; however, disenrollment may also reflect a change in insurance provider. We aim to develop a user-friendly public algorithm to predict death within the year of disenrollment using an administrative claims database.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is a fat tissue specialized in heat production (non-shivering thermogenesis) and used by mammals to defend core body temperature when exposed to cold. Several studies have shown that during non-shivering thermogenesis the increase in BAT oxygen demand is met by a local and specific increase in tissue’s blood flow. While the vasculature of BAT has been extensively studied postmortem in rodents using histology, optical and CT imaging techniques, vasculature changes during...

SAS Code-Determinants of Complete COVID-19 Vaccination Status Among Immigrant Population in North Carolina USA, Qualtrics Survey July-August 2022

Abstract BACKGROUND the COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected certain minority populations and exposed barriers to vaccination. We explored factors associated with complete and incomplete COVID-19 vaccination status among immigrant population in North Carolina, USA. METHODS The factors associated with COVID-19 vaccination status were explored using a cross-sectional study of 98 eligible participants who took an online survey between April and July 2022, on the completeness of COVID-19 vaccine and associated factors. Eligible participants included either...
