Bathymetry for Six Lakes on Calvert and Hecate Islands, BC

Bathymetric surveys were completed for six lakes on Calvert and Hecate Islands as part of the Kwakshua Watersheds Program. The surveys were conducted at different times from May to July 2016 using a canoe-mounted, location-aware depth sounder and by taking random manual depth measurements. All depth recordings are referenced to a survey benchmark and have been quality controlled, cleaned and processed in a 3D GIS environment. For each lake, bathymetry has been modeled by means...

Hakai Institute
From October 2017 to October 2018, underway surface water measurements were collected from the Alaska Marine Highway System M/V Columbia during 81 service route transits. The service route of the Columbia included the ports of Sitka, Juneau, Haines, Skagway, Wrangell, Petersburg, and Ketchikan in southeast Alaska, and between Ketchikan and Bellingham, WA. The vessel sailed from Ketchikan every Wednesday, arrived in Bellingham on Friday, and returned to Ketchikan on Sunday. Measurements of temperature, salinity, dissolved...

LiDAR-derived Drainage Network for Calvert Island - British Columbia - Canada

Santiago Gonzalez Arriola, Gordon Frazer, Ian Giesbrecht, Bill Floyd & Keith Holmes
This dataset provides LiDAR derived stream locations for Calvert and Hecate Islands, British Columbia. Stream locations were delineated from a 3 m digital elevation model (DEM). For each stream segment, the dataset includes a unique identifier and Strahler stream order assignment. This dataset is the result of “traditional” hydrological modeling conducted using the 2012 and 2014 LiDAR-based topographically complete bare earth DEM with a 10 m buffer around the coastline to ensure all modeled streams...

Watersheds of the northern Pacific coastal temperate rainforest margin

This dataset is a polygon representation of watersheds draining to the rainforest margin along the Pacific coast of North America. Watersheds are discrete spatial units of topography that organize the flow of water and materials from land to sea, as well as the movement of biota between marine and freshwaters. As such, watersheds are fundamental geographic units of analysis used by diverse disciplines of science and management. However, regional scale watershed analyses are often hampered...

Surfgrass Community Structure - Length Density - BC Central Coast - 2017-2019

Zach Monteith
The surfgrass length & density dataset is a component of the Hakai Institute’s Nearshore research and monitoring program, designed to capture change in rocky intertidal habitats. The overarching objective of Hakai Nearshore research is to investigate the role of habitats and their associated communities, in the face of stress and disturbances from global climate change and local coastal perturbations. The structure, health, and coverage of surfgrass beds (Phyllospadix spp.) was surveyed at three sites along...

Dissolved organic carbon fluxes of seven watersheds in a bog forest ecosystem at Calvert Island, British Columbia, Canada

Maartje C. Korver
The coastal temperate rainforest of western British Columbia is a major store of carbon and an important contributor to the global carbon cycle. The flux of dissolved organic carbon from wetland-dominated soils is of vital importance for coastal freshwater and marine ecosystems. The objective of this study was to investigate the relation between discharge, DOC concentration and organic carbon flux for seven wetland and bog forest dominated watersheds for a summer and early fall rain...

Koeye River stream temperature, stage, and conductivity time-series version 2

Emily Haughton & Ian Giesbrecht
The shortage of continuous stream temperature, conductivity, and stage data for minimally disturbed, freshwater wadeable streams impedes the analyses of long-term trends in streams data. The collection of these data will further efforts to detect and track climate change–related impacts over the long term, further our understanding of how biological, thermal, and hydrologic conditions and processes vary spatially and temporally and inter-relate to one another. This time-series was created using 5-minute average stage, water temperature,...

Emily Haughton & Ian Giesbrecht
This time-series represents 3 years of 5-minute average stage (HOBO U20L-01), water temperature (HOBO U20L-01), and conductivity (HOBO U24-001) measurements that are Quality Controlled (QC), flagged and corrected where needed for the Koeye River, located on the mainland coast of British Columbia adjacent to Fitz Hugh Sound. The sensor installation and operation described here is done with permission of, and in consultation with, Heiltsuk Nation and BC Parks. We thank Larry Jorgensen, William Housty, Jess...

Observed stream flow from seven small coastal watersheds in British Columbia, Canada, Sept 2013 - Sept 2019

Bill Floyd & M Korver
General field methods In natural streams it is not possible to continuously measure stream discharge, thus an indirect approach was used: river height (stage) was continuously measured at a gauging station using a pressure transducer and periodic discharge measurements were taken along the range of potential stages to develop a stage-discharge rating curve. Detailed description of the measurement methods outlined below can be found in Korver et al. (2020). Pressure transducers were installed in the...
