Automatic tongue contour tracking in ultrasound recordings In recent decades, several types of devices have been constructed to track the invisible movement of the tongue. One of these is ultrasound imaging. The advantage of the measurement method is that it is suitable to track rapid movements, as well, image and sound can be synchronized, and it only causes the speaker, who is not affected by harmful radiation, minimal inconvenience. Its disadvantage is that it does...

The balance between the duration of vowels and consonants The ratio of vowel and consonant durations plays a key role in the speech rhythm model set up by Ramus et al. (1999) and its follow-up variations. In this study, we analysed the relationship between articulation rate and the speech rhythm metric %V in different speech styles. We found statistically significant correlation between the two parameters, implying that speakers exhibiting higher articulation rates tend to have...

Duration of word stems and suffixes in spontaneous speech of teenagers and adults This paper focuses on temporal characteristics of Hungarian words produced by teenage speakers and adults speakers. Analysis of word durations in an agglutinating language has captured much less attention so far. According to the Menzerath’s law, the number of segments in the words is reduced by the increase of the number of syllables the words consist of. This study intended (i) to...

Phonatory changes during emotion-inducing game events Phonatory changes during emotion-inducing game events: the effect of discrepancy from expectations and goal conduciveness. This paper aims to describe how phonation changes during emotion-inducing stimuli. 34 Hungarian speakers (17 female, 17 male) were asked to compete in a simple computerised guessing game, using voice commands to proceed after faced with the result of their guess. We expected that acoustic measures taken on these voice commands differ based on...

Timing characteristics of spontaneous speech across lifespan The physiological changes that occur as people age can also be traced in temporal patterns of language. The goal of this research is to analyse the timing characteristics of spontaneous speech in four different age groups: children, teenagers, adults and elderly speakers. The main question of the research is whether and how the temporal characteristics of spontaneous speech change from childhood to old age. The speech materials of...

Temporal characteristics in the perception of fluency in native speech The aim of the study is to analyse the role of speech rate and articulation rate, and duration, frequency and place of occurrence of pauses in the perception of speech fluency. Two experiments were carried out with the same material. A four-sentence coherent read speech sample was modified according to the analysed parameters: it was accelerated, slowed down, and pauses were modified, too. In the...

The WaveNet architecture is suitable to generate high quality speech, it was demonstrated for English by Google DeepMind. In this paper we de- scribe our experiments of using WaveNet for Hungarian speech generation. We investigated the effects of different control parameters and compared the quality of generated speech with different hyper-parameter settings and with different Hungarian speech databases. We examined the most influential con- trol parameters and we conducted a listening test to investigate the...

Visual phonology: Phonology of sign languages and supporting visual annotation Just like spoken languages, sign languages are fully-fledged, natural languages, but while spoken languages use the auditory-vocal modality, sign languages use the visual-gestural modality. These languages use space in a highly complex way to construct meaning, and it has become possible only recently to build sign language corpora, which are accessible, searchable and can be used for complex linguistic analysis. Although, there have been some...

Word meaning definitions produced by children aged between 5 and 9 The aim of this study is to analyse the development of constructing meaning across ages. What progress can be observed between the ages of 5 and 9 in word-meaning definitions? For analysis, recordings from GABI database were used. In this speech database, one of the tasks is to define 20 words and phrases verbally. Recordings of 30 5-7-9-year-old children were analysed. There were 10...

The main purpose of this paper is to examine if correlations exist beween body height, body mass index, and the formant values of filled pauses in male speakers. Based on acoustic theories of speech, several mathematical formulas exist, which explain the formant frequencies of vowels. It has been suggested by several authors that formants may be good predictors of body size, especially that of body height. The experimental results obtained so far are, however, not...

A néma szünetek sajátosságai óvodások és kisiskolások spontán beszédében

Dorottya Gyarmathy & Viktória Horváth
Silent pauses have several functions in spontaneous speech (e.g. breathing, marking syntactic boundaries as well as speech planning difficulties, time for self-repair). The aim of the study is the analysis of the interrelation between the temporal pattern and the syntactical position of silent pauses in Hungarian children’s spontaneous speech. Our hypotheses are the following: (i) silent pauses show different temporal characteristics depending on their position, (ii) different temporal patterns would be proved in children’s pauses...

Disfluencies and disfluency clusters in cluttered, stuttered and typical speech

Glottal marking of utterance-initial vowels as a function of the syntactic position and the vowel quality In the present study, the glottal marking of utterance-initially appearing vowels was analysed with respect to the syntactic position, the vowel quality, the formal characteristics of the glottal marking (glottal stop, glottalization, and their combination), and the inter-speaker variability. Four members of the Hungarian vowel-inventory were chosen for the analysis: front and high /i/, back and high /u/, front...

Inszubordinált (függetlenedett) mellékmondatok a magyar beszélt és írott beszélt nyelvben

Insubordination in spoken and in written spoken Hungarian This study is the first attempt to examine insubordinate hogy (’that’)-clauses in spoken and written spoken Hungarian. Insubordination is the phenomenon when a clause has the formal features of subordinate clause but is used as independent, conventionalized main clause (for example: Hogy te milyen kényes vagy! ’How spoilt you are’). We found differences between the spoken and written spoken corpora in terms of insubordination, but we couldn’t...

The temporal structure of read speech of male speakers of different ages The purpose of the present study was to demonstrate if differences exist between Hungarian male speakers of different ages in (1) speech rate and (2) frequency and duration of pauses when their read speech is analysed. As expected, a strong correlation was found between age and the tempo values, however, the difference between the two tempo values, i.e. speech rate and articulation rate...

Disfluencies produced by language learners during interpreting Disfluencies are omnipresent in human speech and can be ascribed to the temporary malfunctioning of speech planning and execution. Interpreted speech is different from spontaneous speech in many respects, the most relevant of which is the dominance of the input over the macroplanning. The aim of this study was to examine the disfluencies produced by B2 language learners during interpreting. 4 subjects participated in the research. Their task...

A néma szünetek funkciói a spontán beszédben

Dorottya Gyarmathy
Functions of silent pauses in spontaneous speech Our speech is occasionally interrupted by pauses of various length. They are an essential part of human speech. Until now it is not clarified, what can be actually considered as pause, how differently pauses can appear in speech, what their acceptable minimum and maximum durations are, and what functions they can carry on in speech. This study focuses on the analysis of the temporal structure of silent pauses...

A „zöngeminőség”...
