Pressure, tilt, temperature and conductivity monitoring within the Immerged Santorini Caldera during Jul 2012 - Sep 2013, supplement to: Vilaseca, Géraud; Deplus, Christine; Escartín, Javier; Ballu, Valérie; Nomikou, Paraskevi; Mével, Catherine; Andreani, Muriel (2016): Oceanographic Signatures and Pressure Monitoring of Seafloor Vertical Deformation in Near-coastal, Shallow Water Areas: A Case Study from Santorini Caldera. Marine Geodesy, 39(6), 401-421

Géraud Vilaseca, Christine Deplus, Javier Escartín, Valérie Ballu, Paraskevi Nomikou, Catherine Mével & Muriel Andreani
Bottom pressure, tilt, and seawater physical properties were monitored for a year using two instruments within the immerged Santorini caldera (Greece). Piggybacked on the CALDERA2012 cruise, this geodetic experiment was designed to monitor evolution of the 2011-2012 Santorini unrest. Conducted during a quiescent period, it allowed us to study oceanographic and atmospheric signal in our data series. We observe periodic oceanographic signals associated with tides and seiches that are likely linked to both the caldera...

(Table 1) Age determination of sediment core 56-10-36, supplement to: Kroon, Dick; Austin, William EN; Chapman, Mark R; Ganssen, Gerald M (1997): Deglacial surface circulation changes in the northeastern Atlantic: Temperature and salinity records off NW Scotland on a century scale. Paleoceanography, 12(6), 755-763

Dick Kroon, William EN Austin, Mark R Chapman & Gerald M Ganssen
Sea surface temperature and salinity estimates reconstructed from a core collected on the Barra Fan, northwest Scotland (56°43'N, 09°19'W; water depth 1320 m), show a series of rapid oscillations during the last deglacial period that are very similar to those observed in the d18O records from Greenland ice cores. These records indicate that the transport of heat and salt toward the Nordic Seas was highest during the Bølling period. This ?superconveyor? weakened after the Bølling,...

(Table T1) Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses of IODP Site 321-U1338, supplement to: Drury, Anna Joy; Lee, Geoffrey P; Pennock, Gillian M; John, Cédric M (2014): Data report: late Miocene to early Pliocene coccolithophore and foraminiferal preservation at Site U1338 from scanning electron microscopy. In: Proceedings of the IODP, Integrated Ocean Drilling Program

Anna Joy Drury, Geoffrey P Lee, Gillian M Pennock & Cédric M John
The late Miocene to early Pliocene carbonate-rich sediments recovered at Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site U1338 during the Expedition 320/321 Pacific Equatorial Age Transect (PEAT) program contain abundant calcareous nanno- and microfossils. Geochemical proxies from benthic and planktonic foraminiferal and coccolithophore calcite could be very useful at this location; however, good preservation of the calcite is crucial for the proxies to be robust. Here, we evaluate the preservation of specific benthic and planktonic foraminifer...

Heat shock resistance traits in specimens of the seaweed Gracilaria vermiculophylla originating from native and non-native populations, supplement to: Hammann, Mareike; Wang, Gaoge; Boo, Sung Min; Aguilar-Rosas, Luis E; Weinberger, Florian (2016): Selection of heat-shock resistance traits during the invasion of the seaweed Gracilaria vermiculophylla. Marine Biology, 163(5)

Mareike Hammann, Gaoge Wang, Sung Min Boo, Luis E Aguilar-Rosas & Florian Weinberger
We compared the responses of native and non-native populations of the seaweed Gracilaria vermiculophylla to heat shock in common garden-type experiments. Specimens from six native populations in East Asia and from eight non-native populations in Europe and on the Mexican Pacific coast were acclimated to two sets of identical conditions before their resistance to heat shock was examined. The experiments were carried out twice - one time in the native range in Qingdao, China and...

Physiological response measures (respiration, clearance, byssus production, survival) of Perna viridis during a 91 day exposure experiment to microplastics in Bogor, Indonesia, 2014, supplement to: Rist, Sinja Elena; Assidqi, Khoirunnisa; Zamani, Neviaty P; Appel, Daniel; Perschke, Myriam; Huhn, Mareike; Lenz, Mark (2016): Suspended micro-sized PVC particles impair the performance and decrease survival in the Asian green mussel Perna viridis. Marine Pollution Bulletin, 111(1-2), 213-220

Sinja Elena Rist, Khoirunnisa Assidqi, Neviaty P Zamani, Daniel Appel, Myriam Perschke, Mareike Huhn & Mark Lenz
Perna viridis from the Bay of Jakarta was exposed to different concentrations (0, 21.6, 216 and 2160 mg/l) of PVC microplastic particles for 91 days in a controlled laboratory experiment. Particles were negatively buoyant, but were regularly resuspended from the sediment, mimicking tidal events. The particles were contaminated with the organic pollutant fluoranthene, except for one control group, which was exposed to the highest plastic concentration (2160 mg/l) but with clean particles.Within the 91 days...

Echinometra sea urchins acclimatised to elevated pCO2 at volcanic vents outperform those under present-day pCO2 conditions, supplement to: Uthicke, Sven; Ebert, Thomas; Liddy, Michelle; Johansson, Charlotte; Fabricius, Katharina Elisabeth; Lamare, Miles (2016): Echinometra sea urchins acclimatised to elevated pCO2 at volcanic vents outperform those under present-day pCO2 conditions. Global Change Biology, 22(7), 2451-2461

Sven Uthicke, Thomas Ebert, Michelle Liddy, Charlotte Johansson, Katharina Elisabeth Fabricius & Miles Lamare
Rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations will significantly reduce ocean pH during the 21st century (ocean acidification, OA). This may hamper calcification in marine organisms such as corals and echinoderms, as shown in many laboratory-based experiments. Sea urchins are considered highly vulnerable to OA. We studied an Echinometra species on natural volcanic CO2 vents in Papua New Guinea, where they are CO2-acclimatized and also subjected to secondary ecological changes from elevated CO2. Near the vent site, the...

Late Glacial and Holocene data from sediment cores MD99-2236 and MD99-2256, supplement to: Jennings, Anne E; Andrews, John A; Pearce, Christof; Wilson, Lindsay; Olafsdottir, Sædis (2015): Detrital carbonate peaks on the Labrador shelf, a 13–7ka template for freshwater forcing from the Hudson Strait outlet of the Laurentide Ice Sheet into the subpolar gyre. Quaternary Science Reviews, 107, 62-80

Anne E Jennings, John A Andrews, Christof Pearce, Lindsay Wilson & Sædis Olafsdottir
The Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) was a large, dynamic ice sheet in the early Holocene. The glacial events through Hudson Strait leading to its eventual demise are recorded in the well-dated Labrador shelf core, MD99-2236 from the Cartwright Saddle. We develop a detailed history of the timing of ice-sheet discharge events from the Hudson Strait outlet of the LIS during the Holocene using high-resolution detrital carbonate, ice rafted detritus (IRD), d18O, and sediment color data....
