This films presents voices of Arctic Alaska communities on the dilemmas of development as they negotiate paths of sustainability in the face of climate and socio-economic challenges. The film also explores the paradox of natural resource development dependency in a subsistence-based community.

The Parantica sita is a Danaidae butterfly, which is a relative of the Monarch butterfly, called Asagi-Madara in Japan. Like Monarchs, they fly a long distance over the island of Japan. Shot in by Mitch Denda in Shichimi Onsen, Japan on October 22, 2005.

The Sasakia charonda is called Oh-Murasaki (Big Purple) in Japan, where it is the national butterfly. The dorsal side of the male's wings is a bright breathtaking purple. This video of a male of the species was shot by Mitch Denda in Matsushiro, Japan on July 18, 2005.

Rocky Mountain Parnassian

The Rocky Mountain Parnassian flies much faster than its relative species Usuba-Shiro, which is found in Japan. This video of a male of the species was shot by Mitch Denda in Eldora, Colorado on July 1, 2006. Denda completed back-to-back trips to Japan and Colorado in July 2006 to compare speed flights of Parnassians in both countries.
