Characterization of the halved undersquinted scarf joint and stop-splayed and tabled scarf with key joint (Jupiter joint)

Elena Perria
Historical timber frame structures constitute a huge part of the cultural heritage. The preservation of such structures requires a good understanding of both the original constructional methods and of the load-bearing principles of the structure. Carpentry connections are crucial for the behaviour of the structures, and a good understanding of them is of basic importance to lead a correct structural analysis. The present work introduces the basic load-bearing principles of the stop-splayed and tabled scarf...

Cytotoxic Metal Complexes With N-Heterocyclic Carbenes Containing 1,2,4-Oxadiazole Substituents

Catalin-Vasile Maftei
The work presented in this PhD thesis dealt with the synthesis and antitumor evaluation of both 1,2,4-oxadiazole ligands and their related NHC complexes. Compounds with various steric and electronic properties were designed, isolated and characterised by IR, 1H, 13C NMR, MS (HR-ESI) and X-ray diffraction. Majority of the prepared 1,2,4-oxadiazole derivatives were tested for their antitumor activity in a monolayer cell survival and proliferation assay using human tumor cell lines of different origin/histotype. Six of...

Facilitating Inter-Domain Synergies in Ambient Assisted Living Environments

Jonas Schwartze, Harald Schrom, Klaus-Hendrik Wolf & Michael Marschollek
Current Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) environments lack integration of sensors and actuators of other sub-domains. Creating technical and organizational integration is addressed by the BASIS project (Build Automation by a Scalable and Intelligent System), which aims to build a cross-domain home bus system. The main objective of this paper is to present an overview of design, architecture and state of realization of BASIS by describing the requirements development process, underlying hardware design and software architecture....

Tackling the Bus Turnaround Overhead in Real-Time SDRAM Controllers

Leonardo Ecco & Rolf Ernst
Synchronous dynamic random access memories (SDRAMs) are widely employed in multi- and many-core platforms due to their high-density and low-cost. Nevertheless, their benefits come at the price of a complex two-stage access protocol, which reflects their bank-based structure and an internal level of explicitly managed caching. In scenarios in which requestors demand real-time guarantees, these features pose a predictability challenge and, in order to tackle it, several SDRAM controllers have been proposed. In this context,...

Exploiting Execution Dynamics in Timing Analysis Using Job Sequences

Leonie Ahrendts, Sophie Quinton & Rolf Ernst
Worst case design as needed for critical systems usually resorts to established methods for worst case response time analysis which rely on the worst case execution time of tasks and the minimum temporal distance between task activations. The result is often very pessimistic when compared to the real worst case load. Many feasible designs are therefore rejected under such analyses. Using worst case models based on job sequences rather than single jobs leads to less...
