The U.S. Academic Research Enterprise (US-ARE): Possible Paths from the Pandemic
Jason Owen-Smith
This white paper uses recent public data to identify what we can know systematically about how the COVID-19 pandemic is currently affecting the large, research-intensive universities that represent the core of the US-ARE. It uses those, admittedly preliminary and partial, findings to extrapolate about possible long-term effects of decisions that academic leaders, state and federal policy makers are taking right now. The descriptive story presented here isn't determinative, but it suggests that the pandemic poses...

IRIS receives administrative data on research spending and the purposes of spending associated with funded research projects. As part of data submission to IRIS, universities share object codes (these are often interchangeably used with “spend categories” or “expense categories”) and corresponding descriptions. IRIS has cleaned, processed, and standardized these object...
IRIS UMETRICS 2020 Auxiliary Files
The IRIS UMETRICS 2020 Data Release auxiliary files provide researchers with contextual information on institutions and demographic information about UMETRICS employees who are paid on sponsored projects. Files can also help to retrieve more details about the purpose of each employee / vendor / subaward transaction and sub-organization units (including standardized sub-organization unit names) where grants are administered and research is conducted.
UMETRICS 2017Q4a Auxiliary Files
In addition to core and linkage files, the auxiliary collection provides researchers with look-up and contextual information on institutions, awards, vendors and subaward recipients. Files can also help to retrieve institutional characteristics as well as to map campus- and sub-organization unit-level codes to more detailed descriptions.
