North Pacific Pelagic Seabird Database (NPPSD)

Gary S Drew & John F Piatt
The North Pacific Pelagic Seabird Database (NPPSD) was created in 2005 to consolidate data on the oceanic distribution of marine bird species in the North Pacific. Most of these data were collected using at-sea strip-transect surveys within defined areas and at known locations. The NPPSD also contains observations of other bird species and marine mammals. The original NPPSD combined data from 465 surveys conducted between 1973 and 2002, primarily in waters adjacent to Alaska. These...

Southwest U.S. Mechanically Treated Chaparral Photo Series

Teresa J Brennan Jon E Keeley
Accurate, complete fuels data are critical for making fuel management decisions and for predicting fire behavior and fire effects. A fuel photo series is a useful reference that allows natural resource managers to quickly quantify fuel and vegetation properties by comparing on site conditions to a series of photos showing a range of calculated fuel loads within a similar vegetative community. While there are photo series available for a wide range of ecosystem types nationwide,...

Hydrogeology, Hydrologic Effects of Development, and Simulation of Groundwater Flow in the Borrego Valley, San Diego County, California

Claudia C Faunt, Christina L Stamos-Pfeiffer, Lorraine E Flint, Michael T Wright, Matthew K Burgess, Michelle Sneed, Justin Brandt, Peter Martin & Alissa L Coes
The quality of water in the Borrego Valley is a concern because of the basin's reliance on groundwater for agricultural, recreational, and municipal supply. Groundwater quality can be affected by land-use activities occurring at or near land surface. These activities include irrigation of vegetated landscapes and the use of septic systems to dispose of wastewater. Groundwater quality can also be affected by declining water levels, as there is the potential to change the distribution of...

A GIS Compilation of Vector Shorelines and Associated Shoreline Change Data for Breton Island, Louisiana: 1869-2014

Joseph F Terrano, James G Flocks & Kathryn Smith
Many barrier islands in the United States are experiencing substantive erosion and elevation loss due to storm surge, waves, and sea-level changes; this is particularly true for the deltaic barrier system in Louisiana. Breton Island is located near the mouth of the Mississippi River in the southern end of the Chandeleur Island chain in southeast Louisiana. This report expands on previous geomorphic studies of Breton Island by incorporating additional historic and recent datasets. Multiple analyses...

Carbon Exchange Data - Cypress Swamp Sampling Location (Greater Everglades)

Barclay Shoemaker
Carbon dioxide exchange with the atmosphere over forested subtropical wetlands, such as cypress strands and pine forests in the Greater Everglades, is largely unknown. Here we report a first step in characterizing this atmospheric-ecosystem carbon (C) exchange, as measured with eddy covariance methods at three locations (Cypress Swamp, Dwarf Cypress and Pine Upland) for one year. This file is an Excel file containing data for the Cypress Swamp sampling location. It includes the following data...

WKBT Soils and Floodplain Nutrients

Rebecca M Kreiling
We examined effects of flooding on supply rates of 14 nutrients in floodplain areas invaded by Phalaris arundinacea (reed canarygrass), areas restored to young successional forests (browsed by white-tailed deer and unbrowsed), and remnant mature forests in the Upper Mississippi River floodplain. Plant Root Simulator ion-exchange probes were deployed for four separate 28-day periods. The first deployment occurred during flooded conditions, while the three subsequent deployments were conducted during progressively drier periods. Time after flooding...

Prevalence of West Nile virus in migratory birds during spring and fall migration

Robert J Dusek, Robert G McLean, Laura D Kramer, Sonya R Ubico, Alan P Dupuis, Gregory D Ebel & Stephen Guptill
To investigate the role of migratory birds in the dissemination of West Nile virus (WNV), we measured the prevalence of infectious WNV and specific WNV neutralizing antibodies in birds, principally Passeriformes, during spring and fall migrations in the Atlantic and Mississippi flyways from 2001-2003. Blood samples were obtained from 13,403 birds, representing 133 species. Specific WNV neutralizing antibody was detected in 254 resident and migratory birds, representing 39 species, and was most commonly detected in...

Stream Segments Captures and Crossings Associated With 2012 Aquatic Organism Passage Study Siuslaw National Forest

Nathan Chelgren & Jason Dunham
Stream segments, aquatic organism captures, stream surveys, and road-stream crossings described by these metadata accompany a 2012 electrofishing study of the distribution and abundance of aquatic organisms (fish, lampreys, amphibians and crayfish), conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey, and the Pacific Northwest Region Aquatic and Riparian Ecosystem Monitoring Project (AREMP) of the U.S. Forest Service, in the Siuslaw National Forest in western Oregon, USA. The purpose of the study was to quantify the effectiveness of...
