Sophia Dohlen, Antonia Albrecht & Judith Kreyenschmidt
The production of high quality and safe foods has increased steadily in recent years. At the same time, a sustainable food production gains in importance. Sustainability aspects include several different aspects, such as for example the energy efficiency of production and cooling plants, the logistic concepts, animal welfare aspects or the energy supply concepts. Ekaterina Kulchavenya, Mitsuru Yasuda & Magnus Grabe
Tuberculosis of the kidney, urinary tract and genital tracts (male and female) has followed mankind’s history. During the last century, the number of cases of tuberculosis, pulmonary as extra-pulmonary, has decreased with the social and economic developments. However, in low and middle income countries the trend is still to an increase in the incidence of the disease, especially in populations associated with immunocompromised conditions (e.g. HIV). Ekaterina Kulchavenya, Svetlana Dubrovina, Denis Kholtobin, Victor Khomyakov & Mete Çek
Tuberculosis is a multisystem disease with myriad presentations and manifestations; it can affect any organ or tissue, excluding only hair and nails. Doctors who are not familiar with extra-pulmonary tuberculosis may not include this disease in their differential diagnostic work-up. The share of urogenital tuberculosis among all extrapulmonary forms gets up to 47%, and it is more often revealed in developing countries.

Evaluation of chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome

Giuseppe Magistro & J. Curtis Nickel
Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) is a common condition defined as chronic (at least 3 months) pain or discomfort in the pelvic region, variably associated with lower urinary tract symptoms, sexual dysfunction and psychosocial consequences with considerable impact on quality of life. Since the exact pathophysiology underlying CP/CPPS is still unknown, no specific test for a definitive diagnosis is available. The main objectives for evaluation are to exclude differential diagnoses associated with pelvic pain...

Prevention of prematurity by early diagnosis and treatment of bacterial urogenital infections – The role of bacterial vaginosis

Udo B Hoyme
Bacterial vaginosis has a significant relative risk for miscarriage or prematurity of 1.4–6.9%. In the initial Erfurt trial 0.3% of the neonates with gestational age less than 32+0 weeks were seen in an intervention group vs. 3.3% (p less than .01) in the control group; in the Thuringia campaign the figures were 0.94% vs. 1.36% (p less than .01) for the entire state. The rate of newborns less than 1,000 g was reduced to 0.38%,...
