BiTe3 crystallizes in the trigonal R3m space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Bi5+ is bonded to six Te+1.67- atoms to form edge-sharing BiTe6 octahedra. There are three shorter (3.18 Å) and three longer (3.22 Å) Bi–Te bond lengths. There are three inequivalent Te+1.67- sites.
