Er2CdS4 is Spinel-like structured and crystallizes in the trigonal R3m space group. The structure is three-dimensional. there are ten inequivalent Er3+ sites. In the first Er3+ site, Er3+ is bonded to four S2- atoms to form ErS4 tetrahedra that share corners with three equivalent CdS6 octahedra and corners with nine ErS6 octahedra.
