Lu2(CN2)3 crystallizes in the trigonal R32 space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Lu3+ is bonded to six equivalent N3- atoms to form distorted edge-sharing LuN6 pentagonal pyramids. There are three shorter (2.28 Å) and three longer (2.34 Å) Lu–N bond lengths. C4+ is bonded in a linear geometry to two equivalent N3- atoms. Both C–N bond lengths are 1.23 Å.
