LaIr2B2C crystallizes in the tetragonal I4/mmm space group. The structure is three-dimensional. La3+ is bonded in a square co-planar geometry to four equivalent C4- atoms. All La–C bond lengths are 2.75 Å. Ir+3.50+ is bonded to four equivalent B3- atoms to form a mixture of edge and corner-sharing IrB4 tetrahedra. All Ir–B bond lengths are 2.24 Å.
