The air sensitivity of many substrates, and specifically bio-surfaces, presents an experimental challenge for their analysis by vibrational spectroscopy and, in particular, IR microscopy on a nanometre scale. The recent development of AFM-IR which combines Atomic Force Microscopy with IR spectroscopy to circumvent the Abbe diffraction limit allows nanoscale chemical characterisation of surfaces.
