Chemical stable chlorinated hydrocarbons destroy the protecting ozone layer in the upper parts of the atmosphere - this has been found about 15 years ago, and since that time it became more and more clear how serious the problem is. Traditional refrigerants, e.g. R11 (CCl 3F) and R12 (CCl 2F 2), have to be replaced in course of the next few years by substances which contain less or even no chlorine, for example by R123...
