Explaining simulated phenomena : a defense of the epistemic power of computer simulations

Much of the recent discussion on the epistemology of computer simulations has focused excessively on comparisons with laboratory experiments. I propose, instead, to defend their epistemic power by showing how computer simulations explain simulated phenomena. Explanation, as the philosopher of science conceives it, is an epistemic notion in the sense that it yields understanding of what it explains.
