In the central nervous system (CNS), oligodendrocytes (OLs) generate myelin to facilitate the rapid propagation of neuronal impulses. In multiple sclerosis (MS), chronic demyelination leads to irreversible neurodegeneration that eventually impairs physical and cognitive function.
