Cystic structures in fish ovaries: more common than we think. The case study of Sarpa salpa (Sparidae)

Ovaries of salema Sarpa salpa (Linnaeus, 1758) presented hard structures easily seen macroscopically. Histological analysis suggested that these structures correspond to masses of hydrated oocytes, which are remnants of an incomplete or unsuccessful spawning event. The generalised linear model (GLM) showed that the presence of cysts was significantly affected by month.
