The old pleistocene gravels of the Veluwe can be subdivided into two litho-stratigraphical units: the Formation of Harderwijk (with the older Hellendoorn gravel association) and the Formation of Enschede (with the older Noord Nederland gravel association). The last is the younger one. At its base there are to be found coarse grained sands with boulders from Scandinavia, and this layers have been named Strata of Hattem.
