In the depression of Murnau with its two lakes (Staffel- and Riegsee) a series of glacial sediments up to 70 m thickness is preserved. In the main these are composed of gravels indicating the approach of the Würm glaciation. These deposits are overlain by a groundmoraine of changing thickness.
